Unstoppable Shout - Open your Mouth!

Luke 19:28–40 NRSV
After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ” So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They said, “The Lord needs it.” Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”
Intro:
This pericope of Luke’s gospel is known as the trimphant entry. It is this triumphant entry where we discover Jesus entering into Jerusalem, on the Sunday prior to Resurrection Sunday, that we call Palm Sunday.
We celebrate Palm Sunday in that we remember Jesus’s mission of entering the city of Jerusalem knowing that he would be tried and crucified. He welcomes this as His destiny so that ultimately he will over power the grave and death resurrecting to save us from our sings. And as he enters the city the crowd is found waving plam brances and placing their garments on the road in front of Jesus as he comes into Jerusalem.
And as I looked at Jesus entering into Jerusalem a few things stand out to me regarding His mission...
(pause)
It starts in verse 29 where I began to compare the other Gospel accounts to this account in Lukes Gospel involving him coming near Bethany....
(slight pause)
....and what I found is that in this multitude there are 2 groups present.
John’s Gospel teaches that one of the groups here accompanies Jesus as he enters into the city walking along with him into Jerusalem.
…and there is another group that actually comes out of the city to greet him and lead him into the city when they hear that he is coming.
(pause)
Now.....
The atmosphere is absolutely amazing.....
.....because Lazarus has on fresh clean linen clothes and leather sandals....
…instead of the grave clothes he was wearing the other day
.....and instead of the stench of death and rigor mortis
.........he smells like Jerusalem’s best Issi Miaki fragrance
(pause)
And the bible says......
Jesus stops in the middle of this Olive grove.....
........and he gets the attention of two of the disciples that are with him so that he can send him to get something that he needs for the mission!
(pause)
Look at it now....
Luke 19:30 NRSV
saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
According to the text....
Jesus gives some explicit orders/instructions to these two disciples.....
1. “Go into the village ahead of you”
This part does not require much effort, the only thing needed is obedience.
So let’s look at what Jesus gives them......
Direction - Go into....
Location and Proximity - the village ahead of you....
And what this says is that if we choose to follow the instructions of Jesus we will never get Lost!
Because.....
.....what Jesus is saying is too specific and simple to miss our missional target!
(slight pause - watch this now)
2. “As you enter it, you will find tied a colt that has never been ridden
God says “you will find” that Greek word for “find” …means, you will discover
.....
......and I believe that when we make room in our lives for Jesus’s words, that’s when we begin to truly discover what’s tied up!
Now.....
.....when we look at this colt that is tied up, it is important that we examine what I believe it stands for in my spiritual imagination...
And what I see it representing in my spiritual imagination is..... “Purpose”
(pause)
And if that’s true.........watch this,
.....because that means that Purpose is wating for the disciples to show up, so that it can be released!
(pause and expound)
And the Greek word for “Tied” is ‘Bound
........did you hear what I just said
......that means that PURPOSE is BOUND.........WAITING on some disciples who are following the instructions of Jesus
And as long as they just do what he says to do......
They are getting ready to “RELEASE PURPOSE” that has been bound, waiting on them to show up!
(pause)
Watch this.....
Luke’s Gospel says this colt has “never been ridden
.....and that’s how we know that he represents purpose.
But what is interesting about this colt being chosen by Jesus is that Donkeys are common animals in this context....
And they are known as “Burden bearers”
And I wondered how this young colt would be able to carry a heavy Jesus.....
And then I noticed that when the disciples untied the colt, that they also untied the mother of this colt.
And one of the reasons that it is suggested.....is that they would not have been able to seperate them without a problem.......
......because neither of them would have been content with that move.
(pause)
And then God gave me two things to share with you....
The first thing is in relation to burdens....
........and what I understand in relation to this young colt being able to carry a heavy Jesus is the fact that Jesus graced the colt to be able to carry him.
.....because Jesus is not a Burden Giver, Jesus is a Burden CARRIER.
The second thing is in relation to the disciples bringing the mother donkey along with the young colt.
........and the reason this is important for me to share with you is so that you can realize what Jesus is commanding to be UNTIED.
Because.....
Jesus did not send them to UNTIE relationships
Jesus sent them to UNTIE PURPOSE
(pause and expound)
Jesus says thirdly.....
3. “Untie it and bring it here”
Now I need you to understand that.......
......not since the days of Solomon has a King rode on a donkey
But Jesus is not looking for......
Horses........because horses represent wartime
(pause)
And so......
.......when Jesus sends them to get this common animal it is because of what it represents.
.....because this donkey brings with it the idea of peace. And so while folk may be looking and saying nothing great can come out of anything common.
In my spiritual imagination I hear Jesus saying.....
......bring me what nobody else is expecting so I can COMPLETE my MISSION!
......there’s an entirely NEW thing getting ready to happen!
(pause and expound)
Look at it now.....
Luke 19:31 NRSV
If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”
Jesus says.....
One statement will be enough......
just tell them......
“I need it for my Mission!”
(pause)
Jesus......
.......are you sure you don’t need a STALLION?
......you sure you need a.......
......young colt?
First of all.....
....how does God have a Need in the first place?
And then I started thinking....
And for me theologically God is an all sufficient God!
And so, then I almost thought this was a conflict until it all begin to click!
Because the bible teaches that.....
John 1:1 NRSV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
And so because of this.....
......t
I had to go a little deeper......
.....because maybe Jesus is trying to take this to another level
........maybe this donkey has a purpose before it was even born from a Word perspective
And that’s when I found him......
It’s right there......
Zechariah 9:9 NRSV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
And so......
that’s why Jesus didn’t need a Stallion, or a Clydesdale, or some other large horse.......
.....because the colt was already in the MISSION
Because a purpose does not become great because of its size......
......but purpose becomes great because of its MISSION
And Jesus was looking for a MISSION MATCH..........based on a WORD MATCH!
(pause)
And so.......
........there’s only one thing that Jesus can ride on based on this WORD
“Bring me the young colt!”
(pause)
Luke 19:32 NRSV
So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them.
And what intrigues me.......
......what excites me about this text
......is that,
The very thing Jesus told them was going to happen.....
......is exactly what happened!
(pause)
And what’s so powerful about this is the simple fact that,
.....there is no experience that has the capacity to surprise “A Word from the Lord!”
When God sends the disciples to RELEASE purpose.....he sends them with the TRUTH
(pause)
Luke 19:33–34 NRSV
As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They said, “The Lord needs it.”
[Same as above - already noted]
Luke 19:35–36 NRSV
Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road.
A
The one thing that stands out here is that......
“The people kept spreading their cloaks on the road”
mounts the colt with the
As Jesus is riding along on the colt......
.......the people are going behind Jesus picking up the coats he has already crossed, and laying them down in front of Jesus again to cross over on this carpet of wardrobes they are laying before him..
(pause)
And I wanted to point to this action that comes right before they start shouting......
Because I just believe that it sets the tone for what’s getting ready to happen next!
(pause)
Because.......
........in this biblical context.......
this is what happens when Triumphant Conquerors are honored!
(pause)
Freedom if you’re going to SHOUT.........
your ACTIONS ought to honor the God you’re shouting about!
(pause and expound)
Luke 19:37–38 NRSV
As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!”
The text says.....
When the multitude saw him.....
......they started Shouting because of all of the miracles
......they started Shouting because of all of his power
......they started Shouting because of all of his love
Blessed is the King” = Hosanna which is “Save Now!”
“Peace in Heaven....
......and glory in the highest heaven!”
(pause)
Now.........
as they are SHOUTING
........they are obviously stirring up something
Because there are some Pharisees in the next verse that say to Jesus....
Luke 19.
Luke 19:39 NRSV
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.”
Tell your folk........
......to STOP SHOUTING!
.......tell them to SHUT DOWN the Praise
They’re MAKING TOO MUCH NOISE!
....and what they really meant was
....this is too much honor!
(pause)
Watch this.........
Jesus says.......
If I STOP them from SHOUTING!
If I SHUT them DOWN..........
THE STONES............
.........will OPEN their MOUTH
......and SHOUT OUT!
Conclusion:
I rebuke right now in the name of JESUS
......everything that has tried to steal your SHOUT
.....everything that has tried to SHUT UP your mouth!
Everything that has tried to STOP you from REJOICING over the Goodness of JESUS!!!
Everything that tried to KEEP you from HONORING GOD
(pause)
I rebuke it right now in the name of JESUS!
Now.......
Open your MOUTH with a SHOUT!!!
HOSANNA!!
THE KING..........
.........is COMING!
