Sin is the great enemy!
I have had more trouble with myself than with any other man.
D.L. Moody
It is the black stain that oozes over every page of scripture.
sin and death are put in terms by Paul like an infection.
Romans 5:12 ESV
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—

The gospel breaks sin’s rule.

Romans 6:1–2 ESV
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
Romans 6:1–4 ESV
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

The gospel did not set us free to sin.

Romans 6:1 ESV
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

Grace means a pardon for sinners not a permission slip for sin.

Romans 6:2 ESV
2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
“By no means” is and emotional response! “NOT AT ALL” “CERTAINLY NOT” “NEVER” “ABSOLUTELY NOT”

The gospel sets us free from sin.

How?

The gospel brings Christ’s reign in my life because it unites me to Him.

Key word - United!
Romans 6:5 ESV
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Romans 6:3–4 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Key Phrase
Rom 6:3-

With Him

6 times in 4 verses Paul uses this phrase “With Him” or “with Christ”
Romans 6:4 ESV
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:5 ESV
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Romans 6:6 ESV
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
Rom
Romans 6:8 ESV
8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
What happened on Good Friday?
Christ died on good Friday.
What else happened.
I died with Christ.
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Christ was buried in a borrowed tomb.
What else happened on Good Friday.
I was buried in a borrowed tomb.
What happened on Easter?
Christ was raised and so was I.

The gospel means what happened to Christ happened to me.

How does this deal with my great enemy?
Romans 6:7–11 ESV
7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Rom 6
In light of the death burial and resurrection of Jesus.

Sin is no longer my sovereign.

Romans 6:12–14 ESV
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

12. Pavlov’s Dog Experiment

Study Conducted by: Ivan Pavlov

Study Conducted in the 1890s at the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia
Experiment Details: Pavlov’s experiment with dogs turned out to be one of the most pivotal experiments in all of psychology. His findings on conditioning led to a whole new branch of psychological study.
Pavlov outlined that there are unconditioned responses in the animal by presenting a dog with a bowl of food and then measuring its salivary secretions. In the experiment, Pavlov used a bell as his neutral stimulus (meaning it does not elicit any innate response). Whenever he gave food to his dogs, he also rang a bell. After a number of repeats of this procedure, he tried the bell on its own. What he found was that the bell on its own now caused an increase in salivation. The dog had learned to associate the bell and the food and this learning created a new behavior, the dog salivated when he heard the bell. Because this response was learned (or conditioned), it is called a conditioned response. The neutral stimulus has become a conditioned stimulus.
This theory came to be known as classical conditioning (further developed by experimenter and psychologist John Watson) and involves learning to associate an unconditioned stimulus that already brings about a particular response (i.e., a reflex) with a new (conditioned) stimulus, so that the new stimulus brings about the same response.
