No guilt-- v. 33

 Who can bring a charge against the elect?--anyone can

 But not effectively

 God is the one who justifies--that covers from life to death (all the way through)

 How is the believer’s sin dealt with?--1 John 2:1-2

o “I” and “you” section

o I write this that “you sin not” (Aorist tense--individual act of sin)

o If anyone commits an act of sin (aorist tense)--we have an advocate with the Father

• The intent is to not sin

• But we do

• The solution then is the advocacy of Jesus Christ

Sin (puts 1 John 2:1-2 in context)

 1 John 1:8--sin nature (noun)

o You say you have no propensity to sin?--you are deceived

 1 John 1:10--sin acts (verb)

o Believers have and do sin

o Deny that you make him a liar and the Word is not in us

 1 John 1:7

o If we walk--present tense--if we keep on walking

o We have fellowship--present tense--we are having fellowship

o Cleanses us from--present tense--continually being cleansed

o The appropriation is v. 9

Advocate

 Called beside to help/assist

 John 16:7--with us--intent to help

 1 John 2:1--with the Father--intent to represent

o What does he plead?

• Propitiation

 Jesus Christ the righteous is the satisfaction for our sins

Romans 8:33

 Who can lay anything to the charge of God’s elect?

 Anybody can

 But we have an advocate with the Father

 It is God who justifies
