Psalm 23:5 KJV 1900

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Intro: The book of Psalms is very interesting.

If I was to ask, many would say that King David wrote them.

And you would be about half right.

David would write about half of the psalms (73)

Men like Moses, Asap and the Sons of Korah would come together and write the Five books of Psalms (YES 5).

Spans from about 1410 BC to 400 BC - 1000 years

Every chapter contains some type of praise to God

Topics ranging from war to peace, from sorrow to happiness to the coming Messiah

And probably the most famous of all the 150 Psalms is !

Psalm 23:1–6 KJV 1900

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Last week we looked at this whole chapter, commenting on it verse by verse.

This week I want to look at verse 5

Anointed Head

Overflowing cup

Remember that the Psalms were written centuries apart.

Prepared Table

When David get to verse five it is as though he is answering the question of Psalms 78:19.

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

Anointed Head

All of was a challenge to God…

Talks of turning back in battle

Not keeping the covenant of God

Forgetting to walk in his law, forgetting his works and wonders

How they provoked Him by asking for meat in the wilderness

Literally asking God with doubt in their voice, can you really furnish a table in the wilderness!

David comes along in the 23rd Psalm and answers Israels question centries later saying

Without a doubt, God can prepare a table for you in the dessert and wilderness and in the middle of your enemies!

Old song: God will make a way when there is no way, I know God will make a way for you!

Anointed Head

This is a special thing: Anointing

to consecrate or make sacred in a ceremony that includes the token applying of oil:

to dedicate to the service of God.

I have never studies this but I am comfortable with saying that there is not a book in the Bible that does not have someone, something or some place anointed.

This is a very important principle in Scripture.

It was done different ways for different things...

It was the process of setting something, someplace or someone aside or apart for special service to its creator!

An anointed place:

Everywhere Abraham would walk, set aside for God’s people

Ground where God and Moses met

Mt Sini

Anointed things:

Ark of the Covenant - no one was to touch it - Philistines/Dagon, Uzzah

Cups of the Tabernacle - King Balshazzar would drink out of them and a hand would appear, writing on the wall

People were anointed

Kings were anointed

Priests were anointed

People of God were anointed

As long as those places, things and people were used for the purpose that their creator created them for, all was well!

BUT when things that were sacred was used inappropriately, Judgement always came!

Question: How does one become sacred to God?

How does this anointing happen that David talked about?

When you study this OT anointing and follow it through to the NT

You find that oil of the OT sets us up for oil of the NT which is being filled with his Spirit.

First time this happened:

Acts 2:1–4 KJV 1900

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts

When you are filled with his Spirit, you are set aside for his purpose!
