This is the third Sunday being “Sheltered in Place”
For three weeks most church buildings across the nation have been empty
Mega churches / Midsize / storefronts / Mobile (schools/community centers)
Churches that have cost millions are empty!
Church buildings have been closed to the public until further notice!
In the book of Acts chapter 6 Stephen who was the first recorded martyr in the New Testament was being accused of blasphemous words against God and Moses
In Acts chapter 7 he begins to state his case
In Acts chapter 7 he begins to state his case
He begins to give the history of Israel from Abraham to Moses
He wanted the listeners to know (High Priest & Jewish Men) even though God had brought them through so much.
“"You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.”
Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute!
Ultimately because of his message he was stoned to death for speaking the truth.
I want to draw your attention to
I want to draw your attention to
Acts 7:44–50 ESV
“Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David, who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. But it was Solomon who built a house for him. Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says, “ ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? Did not my hand make all these things?’
“"Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David, who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.
God’s #1 Goal
A dwelling place with man is of supreme importance to God
In Genesis we find God coming down in the cool of the day for purposes of Fellowship
In a Very real sense God had a dwelling place with man.
There came a day when SIN intervened and broke the tranquil peace of the garden.
Dr. Vernon McGee “He broke his fellowship with the One in whose likeness he was, and found himself incapacitated to restore it or to make restoration. Sin now stood between a Holy God and sinner man.”
One of my favorite scriptures in the Bible
Genesis 3:8 ESV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
A true picture of God’s love and grace! - He makes a sound… They could’ve been totally cut off
But he’s #1 goal was to dwell with man…
God is a Spirit and can not be found but only revealed… I’m glad He made a sound in my life!!!
From Adam - Abraham - Issac - Jacob - Moses - David - Even Solomon God wanted to dwell with man..
2 Samuel 7:6 ESV
I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling.
2 Samuel 2:
Tent of Meeting - before the tabernacle was constructed, God met with Moses in a temporary tent of meeting
Tabernacle of Moses - The tabernacle of Moses was the temporary place of worship that the Israelites built according to God’s specifications while wandering the desert.
Both were meant to be temporary dwelling places!
God wanted to dwell with His people / He wanted to lead His people
Special Announcement - God Has Wrecked The Church Calendar
Exodus 13:21–22 ESV
And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.
In the book of 2 Samuel, King David desired to build a house for God to dwell in but God spoke to Nathan sending him to King David saying,
2 Samuel 7
2 Samuel 7:12–14 ESV
When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,
This is a prophetic text - How Solomon is a type and shadow of Christ! “He shall build A house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever”
“I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son.”
Even after Solomon build the Temple
1 Kings 8:27 ESV
“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built!
Isaiah 66:1 ESV
Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest?
The True Dwelling Place!
John 2:
John 2:18–19 ESV
So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
John
John 2:18–20 ESV
So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?”
John 2:20 ESV
The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?”
John 2:21 ESV
But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
Thats why the cross is sooo important - There is no pentecost without the cross!
That’s why God’s dwelling place in not made by hands!
But through the Holy Spirit we are his dwelling place…
1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
No Excuses
Genesis 1:26 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
