What about Angels?
What about Angels?
Angels occupied a big spot in 1st Century Jewish thought/practice
Except the Sadducees
angellos—messenger or angel
Some places in OT the “angel of the Lord” may have been Jesus in pre-incarnate form
Theophanies or Christophanies
In these cases, the Angel of the LORD may have been Jesus
One clue—this angel would accept worship; other angels in NT would not
And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,
“Let all God’s angels worship him.”
Word seems to follow from KJV through most modern translations NASB, ESV
“…you are my son…,” NIV
“…I have become your Father…,” NLT
Both accurate to the original language
Jesus the only human being who can claim divine paternity
Both accurate to the original language
…back to Nativity narratives to prove all that out
A problem with our understanding of the word, Gr. gennao

Our understanding of beget is more like cause to bring into existence
Jesus—the true Son of God existed with God from eternity past
Misunderstanding could be used to promote or defend Arianism
Jesus addressed His Father as “Father”
Jesus is truly the firstborn among those to be resurrected
We are being conformed to His image
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Do we have a problem here?
Does anyone see a problem in the “quote” from ?
Does anyone see a problem in the “quote” from ?
We may see similar things again in Hebrews
Linguistic gymnastics
Quotation is from the Septuagint; angelos
Original Hebrew is a compound word: all/each/every/any
+ god
Elohim—suggests lesser heavenly beings
