This entire Psalm is a psalm of praise to God for His goodness. It begins by saying, “It is a good {thing} to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High.” But notice the latter part of (V 10) “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.” In the midst of praising God for His goodness, the psalmist said, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”

      I. In Bible times, especially in the O.T. men were set apart or consecrated to sacred offices of the Prophet, Priest, & King by the ANOINTING with OIL.

                  A. Oil is a type of the H.S.

                              1. Anointing with oil symbolized that the H.S. would come upon men or woman to anoint them to stand in a particular office.

                                          a. I believe that it is more than just a SYMBOL.

                                                      i. Some say that “oil” is JUST a symbol of the HS. & at the time a person who is afflicted with a sickness is anointed with oil they are to believe God that they are healed, according to

                                                                  a. (JAMES 5:14-15) which says, “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up.”

ii. That's true & that's 1 way to get healed, but I still feel that there is something more to it than that.

                                          b. Let me ask you this, “Why do we lay hands on someone to be healed?”

                                                      i. So that it's a point of contact & at that time the person can release their faith.

ii. That's something that we all need to do. (release faith)

iii. But if you remember the woman with the issue of blood in (MARK 5) when she touched Jesus virtue or power went out of Him.

iv. The same thing happens when hands are laid upon someone. There's more to the laying on of hands than just a symbol or point of contact.

                                                      v. And it's the same with oil.

                              2. When the Bible talks about the anointing with oil, it's referring to OLIVE OIL along with different spices.

                                          a. It was used to consecrate or set aside someone or something for a holy purpose.

                                          b. A person was anointed to stand in a particular office or to render special service to God.

                                          c. Also, an object or a thing could be anointed.

                                                      i. EXAMPLE: In (EXO 40:9‑15) We see that the Tabernacle & its furnishings were also anointed.

                  B. The anointing oil was HOLY OIL & it was used to consecrate or set apart for holy purpose that which the Lord designated.

                              1. EXO 30:22‑25; 31‑33

                                          a. The anointing oil was holy because it was a type of the Spirit of God.

                                          b. After the anointing with oil, the Spirit of God would come upon the man of God to anoint him from that day forward to fulfill his office & to carry out God's plan for him on the earth.

                              2. In the O.T., people were not born again; the H.S. could not live inside them, He could only come upon them to anoint them for service.

                                          a. But in the N.T., the H.S. lives inside believes.  (JOH 14:16‑17)

                                          b. Even today with the H.S. living inside every believer, the H.S. still comes upon those who stand in the 5 fold ministry gifts, so that they would be equipped for service.

II. Before we go on any further let's look at the O.T. & see the Anointing for the different offices.

                  A. 1st of all let's look at the office of the Prophet.

                              1. Turn with me to 1KINGS 19 & we see that Elijah was told to anoint Elisha.

                              2. 1KINGS 19:15‑16

                              3. The Bible declares that the prophets are anointed. (PSA 105:15) Says, “{Saying}, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

                                          a. Other translations omit the word “and.” “Touch not my  anointed ones, do my prophets no harm!” (RSV)

                                          b. God calls His Prophets His Anointed.

                                                      i. They were anointed by the H.S.  The olive oil was a type of someone being anointed with the H.S.

                  B. The Bible also talks about the anointing with oil to equip men to stand in the priest's office.

                              1. Turn to EXO 29:4‑7

                              2. Also look at EXO 30:30

                  C. Then in (1SAM chapter 16), we see an example of a man of God being anointed to stand or function in the office of king.

                              1. Turn there with me. 1SAM 16:1‑8, 10‑13

                              2. Listen to what God said about King David in (PSA 89:20) “I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:”

                                          a. It's the anointing of God which enables a person to stand in the office God has called him to.

                                          b. It is the anointing which enables you to stand in the position where God has called you.

                              3. David, after he was anointed, had the Spirit of God come upon him from that day forward to enable him to stand in that office.

III. To help us understand the anointing in the N.T., we must realize that the terms: POWER, SPIRIT, HOLY GHOST, & HOLY SPIRIT are synonymous to the ANOINTING. In other words they mean the same thing.

                  A. 1st of all lets look at Jesus.

                              1. When Jesus was about 30, He was anointed with the H.S.  He was endued with power from on high.

                                          a. In other words, He was anointed with the H.S. to carry out His ministry on earth.

                              2. LUKE 3:21‑22

                                          a. Believers also need to be anointed from heaven for service just as Jesus was.

                                          b. ? When is the believer anointed for service?

                                                      i. Jesus said in (ACT 1:8) “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.”

                                                      ii. Look at LUKE 24:49

iii. We see later in (Acts 2) when the H.S. descended upon the disciples, that the 1st thing they did was to go out & bear witness of Jesus.

                                          c. The Baptism in the H.S. is the believer's anointing for service.

                  B. Remember that the words, “power, Spirit, Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit & anointing” are synonymous terms.

                              1. Turn to LUKE 4:1

                                          a. Just after Jesus was anointed by the H.S. at the River Jordan, the Bible says that He was full of the H.S.

                                                      i. This is the 1st time that Jesus is spoken of as being full of the H.S.  When Jesus was filled with the H.S. He was anointed.

                                          b. When are the believers full or filled with the H.S.?

                                                      i. (ACT 2:4) Says, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

                              2. LUKE 4:14

                                          a. Immediately after Jesus was filled with the H.S., He returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit because He was anointed.

                                          b. Look at LUKE 4 again, but this time let read from V 14‑21.

                                          c. It was only after the H.S. descended upon Jesus that Jesus began to declare that He was anointed. (V 18)

                  C. Something else that is interesting about Jesus ministry is that He was anointed to stand in all of the 5 fold ministry offices listed in (EPH 4:11); Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor & Teacher.

                              1. In (HEB 3:1) He's spoken of being an APOSTLE.

                              2. In (MARK 6:4) He's called a PROPHET.

                              3. In (LUKE 4:18) He said, “The Spirit of the Lord {is} upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel.” or preach good news or salvation.

                                          a. That's the office of an EVANGELIST.

                              4. In (JOH 10:11) He Said, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

                                          a. The word “SHEPHERD” & “PASTOR” are the same Greek words.

                              5. Jesus also ministered as a teacher. The Word continually says that He TAUGHT.

                                          a. As a matter of fact He taught more than anything else.

                              6. ? How could Jesus be anointed to stand in all those offices?

                                          a. Because He had the Spirit without measure.

                                          b. (JOH 3:34) Says, “God giveth not the Spirit by measure {unto him}.

IV. Just as God has anointed certain people to stand in different offices, He has also called & anointed you to do service for him.

                  A. The word “Christ” means “the Anointed one.”

                              1. You are a Christian, which means “Little Christ.”

                                          a. (ACTS 10:38) Says, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” (KJV)

                                  b. (2COR 1:21) Says that God has anointed us.

                                           i. The word “anointed” in this V is the same Greek work used for Jesus when He is spoken of as being anointed.

                              2. Christ is anointed & so are you.

                                          a. We're just not as anointed as He is, But you are still anointed to do what you are called to do.
