      Last time we started talking about FRESH OIL. We said that OIL is a symbol of the anointing of God. And it's a symbol of the HS coming on someone to equip them to do service to God, in the area that He has called them. This entire Psalm is a psalm of praise to God for His goodness. It begins by saying, “It is a good {thing} to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High.” Then in (V 10) it says, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.” In the midst of praising God for His goodness, the psalmist said, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”

      I. God is still anointing His Apostles, Prophets...& He's still anointing all His people to witness about Him & to do service for Him.

                  A. & God is still anointing kings & priests, N.T. kings & priests.

                              1. When the word “priest” is mentioned, most people think of either 2 things.

                                          a. #1 The priest in the Catholic church.

                                                      i. That has nothing to do with what God is talking about in the Bible.

                                          b. The 2nd thing that people think of is the OT priest that would offer sacrifices to God, on behalf of the people. What he was really doing was interceding in behalf of others.

                              2. Today we are all called to function as a priest, to intercedes to God on the behalf of other people.

                                          a. Some may be called of God to intercede much more than others, but we all are called & anointed to pray & intercede.

                                          b. REV 1:5‑6

                                                      i. This V tells us that we have already been made kings & priests.

                                                      ii. (ROM 5:17) Says, “For if by one man's offense death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.”

                                                      iii. In the Greek this V means “reign as kings”

                                                      iv. You're anointed to reign victorious in this life.

                                          c. (1PE 2:5) Says, “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.”

                                          d. (1PE 2:9) Says, “But ye {are} a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light;”

                                          e. You do have an anointing.

      II. So far we've looked at the anointing in the O.T. & in the N.T.  We've seen the anointing with oil in the O.T. on the prophets, priest, & kings. We looked at the anointing in the life of the believer. Last week we looked at the anointing in the life of Jesus. We see that God is still anointing all believers with the H.S. to go into all the world to preach the Gospel, to witness about Him, for service, & to be N.T. kings & priests unto God.

                  A. But we need to look at another aspect of the anointing.

                              1. JER 2:9‑13

                                          a. In this passage of Scripture, God was speaking to Israel. But there is a message here for us, the Church.

                                          b. Here God is saying that Israel committed 2 evils: 1 evil was they forsook God, the God of living waters,

                                          c. The 2nd evil was they hewed out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns which could hold no water.

                                                      i. In other words, they left God's plan & made their own plans. And because their plans were man‑made, they couldn't prosper.

                              2. A “cistern” is a “reservoir” or a “tank”.

                                          a. A “reservoir” is a place where large amounts of water are kept for the needs of a city or town.

                  B. The Bible is saying in these Vs that by following man‑made plans, Israel could hold no water.

                              1. In other words, They exchanged God's glory for that which couldn't profit.

                                          a. They couldn't prosper because they had their own plans & not God's plans.

                                          b. Believers today need to take a lesson from this, & get God's plan so that we can prosper.

                                          c. God doesn't want us to be empty cisterns, He wants us to be full reservoirs.

                                                      i. But it's up to each individual whether to be an empty cistern or a full reservoir.

                              2. Again (PSA 92:10) Says, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”

                                          a. Believers won't be able to be full reservoirs for God's glory without the anointing of God upon them.

                                          b. You need to be anointed by the H.S. so that everything you do will prosper as you fulfill God's plan for your life.

                  C. ? How are believers going to maintain the anointing of God?

                              1. The answer is very simple; we need to receive a fresh anointing.

                              2. (PSA 92:10) Says, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”

                                          a. Old oil will become stale, it will become rancid or it will run out.

                                          b. God wants His people to continually receive a fresh anointing so they won't be empty cisterns.

                                          c. If we continually receive a fresh anointing then we'll be those full reservoirs to His glory.

      III. But now the big question comes, How are we going to receive a fresh anointing from God, so that we won't be broken, empty cisterns, but full reservoirs to God's glory?

                  A. What are the characteristics of those who are full reservoirs, those who maintain a fresh anointing upon there lives?

                              1. If God wants us full reservoirs then what does He want us full of.

                                          a. 1st of all, He wants us full of the Word of God.

                              2. COL 3:16a

                                          a. If the Word of God is to dwell in us, does it say to what degree.

                                          b. He says to let it dwell in you richly.

                                                      i. This word “richly” means “abundantly.”

                                                      ii. You need an abundance of the Word of God.

                                          c. Imagine that you're a dry sponge that is put into a bucket of water. That sponge would soak up a lot of water.

                                                      i. We are to soak up the Word of God. Get all you can.

                                                      ii. If you're that sponge, anywhere that someone touched you water would come out.

                                                      iii. Be so full of the Word of God so that when the circumstances of life touch you, the Word of God will flow out.

                  B. What else do Christians need a full supply of?

                              1. Full of the Word & full of the Spirit.

                              2. ROM 12:10‑12

                                          a. This same V is a little different in other translations.

                                                      i. KJV says, (ROM 12:11) “Be fervent in spirit.”

                                                      ii. The Centenary Translation says, “Be glowing in spirit.”

                                                      iii. Weymouth says, “Have your spirits aglow.”

                                                      iv. Goodspeed says, “Be on fire with the Spirit.”

                                                      v. (RSV) “Be aglow with the Spirit.”

                                                      Vi. The Amplified Bible says, “Be aglow & burning with  the Spirit.”

                                                                  1. To be fervent in Spirit or on fire with the Spirit is not all up to the H.S.  You have to do something.

                                                                  2. 1 other translation says, “Maintain the spiritual glow.” (Moffatt)

                                                                  3. You've got to maintain that glow of the Spirit.

                              3. EPH 5:17‑18

                                          a. Is it possible to know what the will of the Lord is? YES

                                          b. V. 18 is telling us. (read)

                                                      i. It's the will of the Lord to be filled with the Spirit.

                                                      ii. When you're filled with the Spirit you're going to be anointed with fresh oil.

                                          c. Paul is writing this to Christians who were already filled with the H.S. with the evidence of speaking with tongues.

                                                      i. In the initial filling with the H.S. they received fresh oil, a fresh anointing.

                                                      ii. But there should be many refillings of the H.S. or that fresh oil.

                              4. How are we going to be refilled with the Spirit?

                                          a. EPH 5 19‑20

                                          b. If you want to receive that fresh oil, that fresh anointing, then be fill with the Word of God & continue to be filled with the Spirit.
