57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Cor 15:
57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. 2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. 3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. 9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; 11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, 15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt. 16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. 17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. 18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
John 12:1-
Palm Sunday- On a Sunday Jesus’ rode triumphantly into Jerusalem. Crowds gathered around to celebrate the coming of the Messiah. He had just performed a great miracle a couple of days ago by raising Lazarus (who had been dead 3 days) back to life.

Many in the crowd, probably thought about the many miracles that Jesus had performed over the course of his 3 year ministry. Jesus healed the sick, he raised the dead, on two occasions he fed multitudes of 5,000 and 4,000
Matthew’s view of the triumphant entry is that Jesus was the prophesied Messiah that was foretold of by the prophet Zechariah:
Mark 12:
35 Later, as Jesus was teaching the people in the Temple, he asked, “Why do the teachers of religious law claim that the Messiah is the son of David? 36 For David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said,
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit in the place of honor at my right hand
until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’
37 Since David himself called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?” The large crowd listened to him with great delight.
How could Jesus’ triumphal entry be a victorious celebration? Especially if He knew that in a couple of days He would die.
How could there be any victory in suffering, pain, and death?
John’s explanation of the triumphant entry is that Jesus’ glorification/victory would come through his death and his resurrection.
Matthew’s view of the triumphant entry is that Jesus was the prophesied Messiah that was foretold of by the prophet Zechariah:
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

John’s explanation of the triumphant entry is that Jesus’ glorification/victory would come through his death and his resurrection.
The people were celebrating: they thought that they were celebrating one thing. They had heard about the coming of the Kingdom of God, they heard John the Baptist, they heard Jesus and they heard Jesus’ disciples preach “repent for the kingdom of God was at hand”. Many thought that with Jesus riding into Jerusalem in the manner in which he did signaled the arrival of this kingdom and that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem to take his rightful seat on the throne of David.
However, Jesus wasn’t coming to sit on the throne of David per-say, He wasn’t coming to Jerusalem to be the king of the Jews. What they did not understand is that Jesus had a throne that was greater than the throne of David. His kingdom was a kingdom that was greater than ruling just over the Jews. Jesus after his death, resurrection, and ascension would be crowned “King of Kings and Lord of Lords”.
8 He will swallow up death forever!
The Sovereign Lord will wipe away all tears.
He will remove forever all insults and mockery
against his land and people.
The Lord has spoken!
Victory: without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.
1 Cor 15:
54 Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
56 For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. 57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Victory: without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.
The remission of sin, could not come from the blood of bulls, goats, lambs, or turtledoves, remission of sin could only come from sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.
Sometimes victory has to come through suffering!
When Jesus died, he died and rose again from the dead, he died and was resurrected to give every believer victory!
We been seeing all of this bad news going on, but I want to give every believer a reminder and a bit of good news. WE HAVE VICTORY THROUGH JESUS CHRIST!
8 He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

They spread: Mark’s gospels says that “many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed/spread them in the way. They were willing to lay some things down so that God would get the glory. I would like to present to you today the idea of laying something down so that God can get the glory in your life.

Praised the Messiah: They gave glory to Jesus, they shouted and magnified God, they praised the LORD. Why? Because the Messiah had come, because victory was coming, because God was being faithful and true to His word.

Let God Be Glorified: As they praised the Lord, as they said “Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest” there were some haters in the crowd, telling Jesus to “rebuke thy disciples” and he answered “I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out”.
