1 Peter 2:17 ESV
Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
1Peter 2:17
When you hear the word fear what is it that you think of?
As a child I was thought to fear our parents, law enforcement, teachers and those who are in authority! Then we learned to other things around us as we grew up like bullies, mean people, sickness, death, cancer and then there are things like tornados, earthquakes.
So what is fear:
noun: an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.
verb: be afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening.
verb: be afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening.
verb: be afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening.
Isaiah 8:11–22 ESV
For the Lord spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: “Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.” Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching among my disciples. I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion. And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living? To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. They will pass through the land, greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against their king and their God, and turn their faces upward. And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness.
Noun. fear, dread, fright, alarm, panic, terror, trepidation mean painful agitation in the presence or anticipation of danger. fear is the most general term and implies anxiety and usually loss of courage.
Hosea 3:5 ESV
Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.
Hosea 3:5
Right now we have people all around us walking in fear and casting their fear upon others around them. Yes we are in the middle of a pandemic and yes there is a chance of getting sick and that you could come down with the covid-19 or also known as the corona virus.
I can’t say I am not concerned with what is happening all round me with more and more people being infected and more and more people dying everyday around the world.
But tonight night I want to encourage you and challenge you to put your trust in the Lord and not in the propaganda of fear. There is no need to hoard food, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, baby wipes or anything else.
I do know if you don’t know the Lord as your Lord and Savior, you will be walking in fear, because you have no peace but if you know the Lord you should be walking in peace and not fear.
Tonight I want to share with you about FEAR and not about the pandemonium of fear that is going on around us today!
Isaiah 8
So what is Godly FEAR:
Godly fear is a Fervent Engaged Attitude of Reverence, it is placing respect and honor in the right place, it is knowing that there is only one who can determine whether you go to Heaven or Hell.
So let us look at some verse about fear!
Isaiah 8:11:22
Isaiah 8:13 ESV
But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
The Hebrew word for fear here is (moh-rah) which is reverence, terror and awe, an object of fear, respect or reverence!
Psalm 76:11 ESV
Make your vows to the Lord your God and perform them; let all around him bring gifts to him who is to be feared,
Psalms 76
or who is to be honored and respected!
Isaiah 8:
Hosea 3:5 ESV
Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.
The Hebrew word here is (pah-chad) which is startled to tremble; to stand in awe; to revere or fear, be amazed.
Proverbs 18:24 ESV
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

The Greek word here is (fob-eh-oh) is panic that cause a person to run away, to be alarmed, scared, frightened, dismayed, filled with dread, intimidated, anxious, and apprehensive.
The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trust in the Lord will secure.
Jesus is urging people here to followers not to have a phobia of men which is destructive, a reverential awe or fear of the God, which is constructive.
Proverbs 29:25 ESV
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
When we fear man and his claims or actions we are the ones who are caught in a trap, but the one who puts their trust and fears in the Lord will be safe and secure.
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Proverbs
God did not give us this fear it has been given by this world in which we live and by the fear mongers all around us.
But what He did give us was a spirit of power (strength) love (compassion, kindness) self-control which is the ability to control the fear that tries to grip us. Fear is not from God!!!
Matthew 1
1 John 4:18 ESV
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
1John
The Greek word here is(fob-oss) which causes flight, hence, fear, terror, dread. This also denoted both the fear of terror and the fear of reverence toward God. This is where we get the word known as phobia!
Isaiah 8:11-22
When we come to a knowledge and into a true relationship with Jesus we no-long have to be gripped nor controlled by fear. For in Christ there is no fear, but only perfect love because He forgets our past, our present and future sin, that is perfect love.
If you enjoy a true relationship with Jesus then there need to be no fear of punishment, because you have already been forgiven of all your sin.
The perfect love of God no-longer condemns but free’s you and embraces you just the way you are.
