We’ve been teaching on the Gifts of the HS for the last few weeks. Last week we started on the “Inspirational Gifts.” There are 3 gifts that say something and they are “Prophecy, divers kinds of Tongues, and the Interpretation of Tongues.” All we were able to cover last week was the “Gift of Prophecy.” Today I want to look at the “Gift of Tongues” and the “Interpretation of Tongues.”

     I. 1COR 12:10

              A. The word “divers” is italicized in the KJV of the Bible, which means it was added by the translators.

                        1. Actually, this V reads “to another kinds of tongues.”

                        2. But in another place (1CO 12:28) Paul said that “God hath set in the church diversities of tongues.” (KJV)

                                  a. It’s fine to say divers kinds of tongues, or different kinds of tongues, because of (1COR 12:28).

              B. Divers kinds of tongues are a supernatural utterance by the H.S. in languages never learned by the speaker and not understood by the mind of the speaker and it is not normally understood by the hearer.

                        1. I have heard of a few cases where the person spoke in tongues and it was in a foreign language, where someone understood it and told what was said.

                        2. ACTS 2:4‑8

                                  a. Now there are a few different possibilities of what happened here. 1st it could be that the H.S. opened the ears of these men so that they all thought that they were hearing in their own language.

                                  b. Look again with me to ACTS 2:6 Notice the word “them.”

                                  c. I believe that all the disciples were speaking, all of them in a difference language.

                                           i. Whether they all spoke at the same time in a different direction or whether they took turns speaking it doesn’t matter.

ii. The point is that there are those occasions where the tongues that are spoken are understood by the hearer.

                                d. What was it that they spoke out?

                                           i. In (ACTS 2:11) It says that they spoke out the “wonderful works of God.”

ii. From this V the Interpretation of tongues can be declaring the wonderful works of God.

                                e. In (ACTS 10) Peter went to Cornelius’ house to preach the Gospel to them, while Peter was preaching the HS fell upon them and they were all filled with the HS.

                                           i. In (Acts 10:46) It says, “For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.” (KJV)

ii. One of the uses of tongues and the interpretation can be toMagnify God.”

                        3. Speaking in tongues has nothing to do with LINGUISTIC ability.

                                  a. It has nothing to do with the mind or the intellect of man.

                                  b. It’s a vocal miracle.

              C. Of the 3 vocal gifts, or as we have referred to them before as the gifts of utterance or inspiration, which are the gift of Prophecy, divers kinds of tongues and the interpretation of tongues, The gift of Tongues is the most prominent.

                        1. It’s the most wildly used.

                        2. The reason the Gift of Tongues is more commonly used or in manifestation is that it takes less faith to give a tongue than any of the other Gifts.

                                  a. It’s a gift that easy to use.

II. God will use some people in the public utterance of tongues, and He can use all of us, just not in the same service.

              A. This is the mistake that the Corinthians were making and sometimes it is a mistake that our churches today are making.

                        1. 1COR 14:26

                                  a. There was excess in that Church.

                                  b. Everyone can be used in the gift of tongues, but not at the same service.

                                           i. The H.S. has given us some definite guide lines on the subject of tongues and the interpretation of tongues.

                        2. 1COR 14:27‑28

                                  a. In the Greek the words “TWO or THREE” are personal pronouns which refer to people.

                                  b. We should have no more than 2 or 3 people give a word in a service.

                                           i. That doesn’t mean that there can never be more than 2 or 3 words that go forth, but Paul does say “no more than 2 or 3 people giving the words.”

ii. There still can be those times when the words that go forth are excessive.

iii. God can be speaking to you personally, but you give it out to the whole Church.... If you give out 2, 3, 4, words it gets excessive.

                                  c. 1COR 14:32-33

III. Let’s me just say a few more things about the interpretation of tongues.

              A. The interpretation of tongues is the supernatural showing forth by the Spirit the meaning of an utterance of tongues.

                        1. The interpretation of tongues is not a translation of the tongues that was spoken, it in an interpretation.

                                  a. That is the reason that a tongue may be short but the interpretation is rather lengthy.

                                  b. Interpretation of tongues does not operate unless tongues for public use have been in operation.

                                  c. The interpretation of tongues is to let the hearer understand what was said by the gift of Tongues.

                                          d. The purpose of the interpretation of tongues is for edifying the body.

                                                     i. 1COR 14:5

ii. Either the 1 gift of Prophecy or the 2 other gifts of utterance are all for edifying the body of Christ.

iii. But according to this V the interpretation of tongues is equal to prophecy; (1COR 14:3) says that Prophecy is for “edification, and exhortation, and comfort.”

                        2. Now God does speak to us in other ways, He has given to the church Prophecy, Tongues, and the interpretation of tongues to speak to us.

                                  a. But what are some of the other ways?

                                  b. He speaks to us through His Word.

                                  c. He does speak through teaching and preaching the Word of God.

                                d. The Bible teaches us that He will also speaks to us through the H.S. to our spirits.

              B. Getting back to the subject of Tongues and the Interpretation of Tongues; Kenneth Hagin once said, “The minute one speaks forth prophecy (or a tongue and Interpretation) he has a higher authority with it. The words take on more authority and have a greater anointing. In other words, there is more inspiration to it and everybody is blessed more.”

                        1. 1COR 14:1

                        2. I think this is why Paul said, “But rather that ye may prophesy."

              C. One of question that is brought up from time to time is; when someone gives a tongue and they interpret their own tongue, is that scriptural.

                                  a. There is nothing wrong with that. It is not unscriptural.

                                  b. The Bible says that there should not be a tongue if there is no interpreter.

                                           i. As long as there is an interpreter everything is fine.

                                           ii. Look at 1COR 14:13

IV. I’m going to end with something Paul said in (1COR 14:26) “Let all things be done unto edifying.” (KJV)
