On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
PRAISE THE LORD!…HALLELUJAH!
I am so glad to get to this moment with everyone. Sooo thankful for the opportunity Jamie, Austin, and I have had to encourage everyone in focusing on all the Bible says about Easter/Passion Week. Thank you to those who have shared with us how much you have appreciated the devotionals and Easter songs. If you haven’t seen these videos yet, please check out our Facebook page or YouTube channel.
Today, we’re are going to focus our attention on …but before you turn there in your Bibles, please turn to . Before we get to the Resurrection Sunday Hallelujah of the empty tomb…I want to remind us of the gut-wrenching events of the Cross and Good Friday...
THE CRUCIFIXION ()
Telling the story of the Crucifixion.
Jesus confronts his betrayer and arresting contingent.
Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to him, went out and said to them, “Who is it that you’re seeking?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “I am he,” Jesus told them. Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them. When Jesus told them, “I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.
Jesus is…and testifies of…THE TRUTH!
“You are a king then?” Pilate asked. “You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” “What is truth?” said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no grounds for charging him.
From “Hosanna!” to “Crucify Him!”
They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?” “We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered. Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away. Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.
Jesus’ unfaltering care/compassion!
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
“IT IS FINISHED!”…Ultimate sacrifice. Ultimate Love. He paid the price required of us for our sin.
jn 19.25-
After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
jn 19. 28-
“This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.
THE RESURRECTION ()
Mary Magdalene, Peter, & John ()
The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and believed.
[“He’s Alive!” - Don Francisco]
Peter and John, more so John, begin to see and believe! The spark of rejoicing.
Mary Magdalene, Jesus, & the Disciples ()
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”—which means “Teacher.”
Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what he had said to her.
A wonderful lady, whose life was changed…was one of the first to the tomb that Sunday. Deeply distressed to great rejoicing…and sharing!
The Disciples & Jesus, without Thomas ()
Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
jn 20.
We’re just getting to Sunday night. Even with what the disciples have seen and heard…they are still afraid of the Jews (leaders…if they did that to Jesus, what about us?)
Jesus came to them. Peace.
Now the disciples are rejoicing (expressing their feeling of great joy!) more…but one was missing.
The Disciples, Including Thomas, & Jesus ()
Thomas responded to him, “My Lord and my God!”
The one absent…needing encouragement…got it. He responded(!) with faith proclaiming truth.
Why did John write all of this story about Jesus down?
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
