What is the resurrection?

It Is The Focal Point Of The Christian Faith

It Is The Focal Point Of The Christian Faith

It was the substance of the first preaching

It was what the first Christians were known for believing

Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), .

The apostle Paul, who began as a persecutor of the Christians, believed in the truth of Jesus death and resurrection…upon faith in those truths the resurrection became the foundational teaching and preaching of the Apostle Paul

The Resurrection Was The Central Teaching Of The Apostles

Not only Paul..but:

Peter

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), .;
3:21

It was the focal message of each of the Gospels

Not only is the resurrection the focal point of christianity and the central teaching of the apostles...

The Resurrection Is The Cornerstone Of Christianity

Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: 14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. 15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. 16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: 17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), .

Paul is presenting the reality that the resurrection is essential because it is one of the four pillars of the gospel

Christ died.

Christ was buried

Christ was raised.

Christ appeared.

These are the truths he presents in verses 1-5 of ,

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), .

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

Without the resurrection there is no gospel message. Its importance to the Christian faith cannot be overestimated.

Maybe you are wondering…what is the gospel?

The gospel, in the original language of the Bible, literally means Good News

Think about this…in order to have good news we first need what?

The bad news

So before we get to the good news lets first understand the bad news

The bad news is that each of us fails to meet the perfect standard that God has set for us…we call that sin

In the garden of eden God created Adam and eve and gave the standard of displaying their faith by their obedience

God asked them not to eat of the fruit of one tree out of a garden full.

God was asking them to display their trust in His goodness through obedience

They chose to doubt Gods goodness and disobey

The apostle Paul in ,

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, vfor that all have sinned

The Holy Bible: King James Version, Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version. (Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 2009), .

When Adam and Eve chose disobedience sin entered the world and the consequences of that sin was death

Whether we like it or not, whether we see it as fair or not…because of the choice of Adam and Eve to disobey God sin has come upon the entire human race.

So the bad news is that you are a sinner.

The Good news then is what we refer to as the Gospel

Other times the wording is different

Someone got saved…They were born again

These are all phrases that point to the truths of the Gospel

The best news is that because of the gospel…the reality of Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection…we can be freed from the guilt and penalty of our sins

There is the reality of spending all of eternity in Hell

That is a very dire consequence

But I want to present to you the flip side of that reality

God created the world and all that is in it, including us, to live in peace and harmony together

That is God desire for His creation

We were created to love and worship Him

In this world that has been effected by sin we often choose to give our affections to things other than God

Relationships

Power and position

Substance abuse

Material things

And when we fill the spot in our lives that is meant to be filled by God with these things they can never satisfy

This is why the nicest car at some point was the nicest car

The perfect person in our life begins to display flaws

One drink, one injection, one more pill will never be enough

You are always left feeling empty

You are always left wondering what to fill that void with

We celebrate the resurrection on Easter

We preach the good new of Jesus’ death burial and resurrection because that is what allows us to once again have that peaceful and harmonious relationship we were created for.

How do we get that peace?

Paul tells a man in who is asking that question these words

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved

It is as simple as understanding that you are a sinner and admit that sin

That you believe on Jesus and the Gospel message, that he came, died, and rose again

Finally that you confess, or repent, of those sins

It can be the simplest prayer but if you believe in your hearts and call out to Jesus He will forgive your sins, bring you back into that peaceful relationship with God.

If you believed, if you asked Jesus to forgive you…that is just the beginning.
