Chronicles of a King

Today we conclude our series, Chronicles of a King. Over this week, we shared the last week of the earthly ministry of Jesus; starting with Palm Sunday and concluding with His resurrection.
The resurrection of Christ, Easter, isn’t just a holiday that gives us an excuse to dress up and connect with loved ones and go to brunch. The resurrection of Jesus marks the moment when sin, death, the grave, and hell were defeated. It is the very foundation that our faith is built on. It is this revelation that the enemy of our soul wants to keep out of our spiritual grasp. Jesus is the only savior, the lived for us, died as us, and empowers us to be like Him.

Prayer

Lord we thank you that when we gather in your name, no matter how we gather, you are in our midst. I pray that you speak to us today. We posture ourselves with open hands to release and receive. Open our eyes, ears and hearts.

Scriptures

John 14:12 ESV
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
John 14:22 ESV
22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”
Romans 8:11 ESV
11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Romans 8:1 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:21–22 ESV
21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
1 Corinthians 15:12–22 ESV
12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
1 Corinthians 15:56–57 ESV
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Chronicles of a King

Today we conclude our series, Chronicles of a King. Over this week, we shared the last week of the earthly ministry of Jesus; starting with Palm Sunday and concluding with His resurrection.

Scripture

All four gospels provide detail and texture to the resurrection narrative, each focusing on a different detail that when read together, gives a panoramic view of the event…similar to cameras in the matrix. Today, we will be looking at different passages from each gospel to unearth the transformative power of this moment.
John 20:1-
John 20:1–8 ESV
1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;

Prayer

Lord, today it is with great joy we come before you thankful for your resurrection as it frees us from bondage. We invite you into our homes and ask that you speak to us. Give us open eyes, open ears and open hearts. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Background/Context

Here is a condensed recap…man sins in which allows death to enter our reality and become the consequence of sin. As humans, we inherit sin and our sin nature from Adam and Eve. However God had a plan. He provides an enigmatic prophecy in that says that woman would give birth to a child that would crush, defeat our adversary but it would come at the expense of His life. From that moment, everything in scripture is setting the stage for the birth of this deliverer. Every time we see conflict in scripture, it is the enemies attempt to keep this prophecy from coming to fruition. Then 2000 years ago, a child is born, a son is given…his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace…Immanuel, God with us. Jesus! Jesus lives a perfect life, not only fulfilling prophecies but also winning in areas that we could never do in our strength. He lived a life of justice, equality, freedom, and love, but those that benefited from injustice, inequality, and oppression hated His message and killed Him for it.
His followers were scattered, confused, and grieving because when Jesus took His last breath, their hope died. Everything they invested their lives into died. On Sunday morning, a group of women went to the grave to grieve and properly anoint His body. Knowing the tomb was sealed, they pondered, how are we going to actually get to Him since the door is closed? They were moved in their heart to do something but they didn’t know how they were going to do. What they did not know is an angel had rolled back the stone granting them access. If they would have stayed where they were, they would have missed what they were supposed to see. Sometimes you won’t know until you go. They arrived and saw that the tomb was empty. THIS. IS. THE. GOOD. NEWS.
In any other scenario, something being empty isn’t good news. Toothpaste, toilet tissue, refrigerator, gas tank, bank account…none of that is good news. However the empty tomb has different implications. The empty tomb means a full life. Who would have thought that the death and resurrection of Jesus would result in the birth of a new life for us?

Observations/Points

The empty tomb means we are filled with HOPE

Linen: We are told that the linen that once wrapped Jesus was neatly folded and left behind. If it was grave robbers, they would not have had the time to gently unwrap the body of Jesus and leave everything neat in its proper place. It is a moment of urgency and panic. Yet we are told that His grave clothes are neatly folded. Almost like when He got up, He was like, ‘nah, I’m not going to wear this today’. New season calls for a new wardrobe. When I lived up north, we had winter, I don’t need that covering anymore. Adam and Eve, over compensated with the fig leaves…they tried to figure it out themselves. Put on the righteousness of Christ and leave your grave clothes behind.
Living amongst the dead
Living amongst the dead: In her grief, Mary couldn’t recognize what was going on. The angel says, why are you looking for the living amongst the dead? Are you looking for life in things that can never deliver on the promise? What
Called her name: Sometimes Jesus makes it personal to get our attention. It opened her eyes and she wanted to hold Him there. He tells her, don’t cling to me. Don’t try to keep me here.

The empty tomb means we are filled with PEACE

Shut in: The disciples are in a locked room, door closed, shut in. Shut in with fear. However, Jesus shows up in the middle of it. They were shut in, but Jesus was not shut out. (Noah, Shadrach, Upper Room…Pentecost)
Matthew 18:20 ESV
20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

The empty tomb means we are filled with His PRESENCE

Receive the Holy Spirit: Jesus breathes on His disciples the same way God breathed on Adam in the garden. Through Adam, the garden was turned into a grave. Through Christ the grave was turned into a garden. The tomb is empty…He isn’t there, because He is here!!!

Closing

Jesus shared with His disciples frequently that His mission was to take our place on the cross so that we can have a place at His table. The cross is our invitation to the kingdom. The empty tomb means a full life. However, we often have an empty life because we haven’t accepted that there is an empty tomb.
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Perish means destruction, death, loss…empty. Jesus died for you so that we can live for Him. We have a choice…continue to live an empty life or be filled with hope, peace, and His presence by exchanging my emptiness for the empty tomb. I think we can relate to Mary. We are standing in a grave not realizing that Jesus has turned it into a garden. The cross invites us to step beyond death and experience life. Eternal life…outside of Jesus, is death and eternal separation from God…choose life; chose the garden.

Salvation

Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Pray this prayer with me out loud: Jesus I confess you as Lord of my life. I repent of my sins. I believe that you died on the cross and rose from the dead. Fill me with your Spirit and order my steps. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
I believe that you died on the cross and rose from the dead
If you prayed that prayer, we want to hear about it. Text Decide to 25101
