The Message of Christ & The Empty Tomb

Luke 24:1–12 ESV
1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.
Two men delivered a message that would change the world. “He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” The ladies remembered this message from Jesus and immediately went and told the eleven disciples and others.
This message sunk in with Peter after he observed the empty tomb and the linen clothes that had covered the lifeless body of Jesus. This message “He has risen” puts an exclamation point to the ministry of Jesus. It is funny how news, a word or a message can transform our mood, our day, our lives. The right message can bring happiness, joy, celebration. A message can also send our lives spinning into chaos, emotional distraught, anxiety, fear. To be quite honest the message of Christ does both. To some it brings life, to others who reject it, death.
Jesus had
What message is God sending us with an empty tomb and a resurrected savior? What is the overarching message of Christ? Let’s read in the New Living Translation.
Colossians 3:16 NLT
16 Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.
The message of Christ tells the story of how God reconciled himself all things through Christ, by way of the cross. The blood of Jesus was more than sufficient to pay for the sins of mankind! We read in .
Colossians 1:15-20
Colossians 1:15–20 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

2) The Message of Christ and the empty tomb: Jesus Gives New Life

Colossians 3:1 ESV
1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Ephesians 2:8 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Ephesians 2:8
What does this saving faith look like? I think we have learned that it goes beyond just gathering
2 Cor. 5:17
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 2:15
The old is gone? Wait, I feel the same.
Ephesians 2:8 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
2 Corinthians 2:15 ESV
15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing,
The old is gone? Wait, I feel the same.
Colossians 3:1–4 ESV
1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Colossians
Colossians 3:1–3 ESV

When we place our faith in Christ we are redeemed. That happens instantly. What happens in the spiritual realm does not always translate into the physical world we live in immediately. The Holy Spirit marks you, you may experience a supernatural feeling of peace, you may express it emotionally or you may not experience anything other than knowing you need Jesus and you have asked him to forgive you of your sins and you believe that you have been forgiven. Where do we go from here to experience this new life?
Colossians 3:1-3
Paul says here to seek things that are above…set your minds on “God” things and not things that are on earth. In others words for us to see our new life grow here in real time we must exert some energy into learning about God things, kingdom things, Jesus things.
We are new because we have made right with God through the blood of Christ.
God develops that new life in us as we pursue him in prayer, study, and action.

3) The Message of Christ and the empty tomb changes everything

As we set our minds of Christ it changes you. Change? I thought Jesus loves me just the way I am, why do I need to change? Before Christ, sin predominantly controlled our life, it defined who we were. Ephesians chapter 2 verse 2-3 says we followed the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience. We were by nature children of wrath.
Colossians 3:16 ESV
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Ephesians 2:2–3 ESV
2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
I don’t know about you but that sounds like there must be a change in us. Paul goes on to say that in Christ, we are God’s workmanship, created for good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
When we encounter Jesus and place our faith in him it will change the direction of your life. Faith leads to repentance which leads to new life.
Luke 15:7 ESV
7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
Luke

Repentance leads to celebration in heavenly places.

Acts 17:30–31 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

Repentance puts on us the righteousness of Christ.

James 4:8 ESV
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Repentance draws us closer to God.

As the message of Christ fills our lives, let us teach each other. I pray that when this season of the virus is behind us people flood church buildings, home groups, connection groups, worship services.
Let us go back to
