Intro

Yesterday we looked at Jesus arrest, today we are looking at how Luke described the last few hours of his life
After he was arrested Jesus was taken to Pilate, the governer of Judea, where the people who arrested Jesus said...

We have found this man misleading our people. He is against paying taxes to Caesar. And he claims to be Christ, a king.”

Pilate asked him

“Are you the king of the Jews?”

“Yes. It is just as you say,” Jesus replied.

Then Pilate spoke to Chief Priests (The people who had wanted Jesus arrested) and the crowd

He announced, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”

when the chirst priests told him that Jesus home town was in Galilee Pilate sent him to Herord who was in charge of Galiee
Herod asked Jesus a lot of questions which Jesus didn't answer so Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and sent him back to Pilate.
When Jesus was back Pilate said to the Chief Priests

You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15 Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. 16 I will therefore punish and release him.”

“You brought me this man. You said he was turning the people against the authorities. I have questioned him in front of you. I have found no basis for your charges against him. 15Herod hasn’t either. So he sent Jesus back to us. As you can see, Jesus has done nothing that is worthy of death. 16/17So I will just have him whipped and let him go.”

But the crowd cried out

“Kill this man! Give Barabbas to us!”

Barabbas had been thrown into prison. He had taken part in a struggle in the city against the authorities. He had also committed murder.

The people kept shouting that Jesus should be killed and in the end Pilate just gave up and let then do it, and instead of setting Jesus free like he should have he let Barabbas go instead.
So they led Jesus away to be killed by being nailed to a cross
But it wasn't just Jesus that was going to be killed that day there was two people who had broken the law so Jesus was put on a cross right between them.
As he was on the cross Jesus said

“Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.”

As horrible as it sounds people even made fun of Jesus as he was dying saying

“He saved others. Let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”

“He saved others. Let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”

36The soldiers also came up and poked fun at him. They offered him wine vinegar. 37They said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

and

“If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

Even one of the criminals started to make fun of Jesus

He said, “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself! Save us!”

But the other one told him off and spoke to Jesus saying

“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Jesus told him that

“What I’m about to tell you is true. Today you will be with me in paradise.”

Then at 3pm
Jesus called out in a loud voice

“Father, into your hands I commit my very life.” After he said this, he took his last breath.

After he died a man called Joseph took Jesus body and put it in a tomb
Thats where the story ends today.
Now for a lot of us we know how that story ends, but the people at the time didnt know for sure, Jesus disciples, didnt know what was going to happen. imagine how they would have felt knowing they all ran away from Jesus and left him to die.

Main Takeaways

But
Theres a hint at what Jesus is doing in Barabbas, Jesus Death set him free,
Jesus right to the end was showing love to people, in asking God to forgive the people who were killing him,
We can look at this in a couple of ways
Its an example for us, we should show love, even to people who hurt us
Jesus really can and does forgive people, in a way that we never could.
Thats all for today see you tomorrow.
