A Heavenly Transaction

2000 years ago on the First good Friday a transaction took place. It was a purchase! A heavenly transaction that took place between God the Son and God the Father. This was a transaction who’s terms had been set from the foundation of the world.
God the Son would have a people for his own possession. They would be his and he would purchase them for himself.

The Terms

The terms of this agreement were high, because it meant paying a ransom.
Ransom- a payment that purchases freedom or deliverance.
Redeemed used of all types of purchases. Lands, slaves, etc..
Illustrated Best By the Passover in Egypt
God had determined judgment on Egypt for their sins and for their refusal to heed his commands. So he declared that every firstborn in Egypt would die. Egyptian, Hebrew all. But he made a provision for his people. Whoever would pay the ransom price of the life of an unblemished lamb would be spared and be redeemed from bondage.
you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.
Exodus 15:13 ESV
13 “You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.

A People In Bondage

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Ex 15:13). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Not to Egpytians or literal slaves, but in bondage to our own sins!
Why Do you Sin? Why do you do or think wrong? The Bible says, because you are a slave to it!
Slave to Your Lusts: vs. 14
Slave to Vain Religious Ways: vs. 18
John 8:38 ESV
38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
John 8:34 ESV
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
So man was in bondage to sin, and in debt to the holiness of God and under his wrath.
“Head to foot, no soundness in them.”

A Price To Pay

Ephesians 5:2 ESV
2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
That price was the death of God’s own son. That alone was a sufficient price to pay for the debt of man’s sin.
So before the foundation of the world God had given a people to the son as a possession, and ordained that he would be the savior of that people. He came to this world declaring that he was heaven sent with a mission, and that mission was to lose none of those that had been given to him. On the First Good Friday, that payment was made!
John 6:38–39 ESV
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.
Hebrews 2:14–15 ESV
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
Hebrews 2:14
Acts 20:28 ESV
28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
The transaction was for the purchase of God’s people. The debt was the cost of their sins and it’s punishment.
There are many scriptures that teach us about this transaction. Some emphasize the goal in the transaction, to purchase a people, to redeem them from their iniquities. Some verses focus on what we were redeemed from, and redeemed for. Our text today tells us the price of our purchase. It was no menial price that was paid. It was an insurmountable amount! It was needed because the price of our sins was high!
Some verses focus on what we were redeemed from, and redeemed for.

The Value of Christ’s Death (Precious)

Compared and contrasted to money to indicate the value of Christ’s death. It was of great worth and value.
Defining Precious: of great value, rare. Used of Jewels in Revelation.
Revelation 21:11 ESV
11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.
Revelation 21:19 ESV
19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald,

It’s Intrinsic Value

Determined by God and his righteous standard. Not fluid, but firm and established.
He has a impeccable taste. Unhindered by the limits of our finite minds and perceptions. God sees all, he knows all. He judges everthing rightly. And what was his judgment of the son?
Beloved By God
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

It’s Imperishable Nature

Money is perishable, it can be consumed and yet we put so much value on it. Christ’s death is of imperishable quality. It’s luster will never diminish, it’s potency will never fade, it’s strength will never wane, it’s vitalilty and life giving effects will never diminish.
Revelation 5:9–10 ESV
9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”
The blood that Jesus shed for me
Way back on Calvary
The blood that gives me strength
From day to day
It will never lose its power
It reaches to the highest mountain
It flows to the lowest valley
The blood that gives me strength
From day to day
It will never lose its power
The blood of Jesus speaks for me Be still my soul, redeeming love Out of the dust of Calvary Is rising to the throne above There is no vengeance in His cry While "It is finished" fills the sky Forgiveness is the final plea The blood of Jesus speaks for me My heart can barely take it in He pardons all my guilty stains Surrender all my shame to Him He breaks the curse of every chain My sin is great, but greater still The boundless grace His heart reveals A mercy deeper than the sea The blood of Jesus speaks for me When my accuser makes the claim That I should die for my offense I point him too that rugged frame Where I found life at Christ expense See from His hands, His feet, His side The fountain flowing deep and wide Oh, He did shout the victory The blood of Jesus speaks for me Worthy is the lamb Worthy is the lamb, Lamb for sinners slain Jesus, Lord of all Glory to His name Heaven crying out, let the earth proclaim Power in the the blood, glory to His name Worthy is the Lamb Lamb for sinners slain Jesus, Lord of all Glory to His name (Glory to His name)

It’s Rarity

Revelation 5:9–10 ESV
9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”
It’s rare, and un-matched. What can I say to you of the rarity of Christ’s death. It’s one of a kind, no other substitue.
One mediator, one name, it’s only him!

It’s Impeccable Character

Valuable for What?
An offering for sin.
It was costly because Jesus was of impeccable character. It was an impeccable sin-offering.
It has the ability to cleanse and to remove sin. It expiates sin and propitiates God.
It’s not a means to get your best life now, or to cleanse you of your diseases. But to pardon you from your sins.
It’s is of impeccable character. It is a sufficient cure. It has never failed to purge men of their sins. It’s a guaranteed cure!

Do you Value His Death?

Peter’s Point is that this value rightly ascertained should cause you to act a certain way.
Illustration: How would you behave with a rare jewel or a great sum of money on you?
Fear: reverence.
Hebrews 9:14 ESV
14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
