Jesus is Scourged
When I arrived at the Governors feast
I saw Pilate on a terrace overlooking the court yard
And he washing his hand in front of everyone,
And then he cried out in loud voice, “I am innocent of the blood of this man!
You, you people see to His death! “
And then I couldn’t believe my eyes,
I saw Barabbas, a well-known criminal just walking away - free.
Then Pilate had Jesus my Lord, WHIPPED and beaten.
To my horror though the day wasn’t finished.
Pilates solders took Jesus to the Praetorium,
The whole garrison gathered around Him like wolves at a fresh kill.
And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
After they had twisted a crown of thorns together,
Then they put it on my Lord’s head and they placed a reed in His right hand.
And mockingly they bowed down on a knee before Him saying,
“Hail, King of the Jews!”
30 Then they spat on Him,
and took the reed and struck Him on the head.
And when they had finished mocking Him,
they took the robe off of my Lord and put His own clothes back on Him.
Then they lead Him out of the city to be crucified.
As they left the city, they found a man from (Sy – ren – nae) Cyrene, named Simon.
And they forced Simon to carry His cross.
And when they had come to the place called (gall – ga – tha) Golgotha, The Place of the Skull,
They gave my Lord sour wine mixed with gall to drink.
But when He had tasted it, He wouldn’t drink.
Jesus is Crucified
Then they placed my Lord on a cross,
First, they pounded a nail through His right hand and then through His left.
Next, the soldiers drove a spike through His feet – one place over the other.
After He, my Lord an innocent man, was nailed to a cross reserved for criminals
He watched below His bloody dripping feet as they began to divide His garments by casting lots;
This fulfilled that which was spoken by the prophet:
“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
While the soldiers were sitting around Him, keeping watch over Him,
They place a written indictment above him saying,
THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS
Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left.
And those who passed by (blass – femed) blasphemed My Lord, wagging their heads and saying,
“You, You who said you would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself!”
“If you are truly the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
As the chief priests, the scribes and elders walked by - all mocking Him,
“He saved others; cannot He save Himself.”
“If He is truly is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.”
“He trusted in God; let God deliver Him now
- if God will have Him;
for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.”
Just as the priests had done,
So did the criminals being crucified to His right and to His left,
Cursing Him and mocking Him with the same venomous words.
Jesus Dies
Then from the 6th hour until the 9th hour there was darkness over all the land.
At about the 9th hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “EElai, EElai, lama, saw – bach – thawny” that is to say, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Some of those who stood there, when they heard this, said,
“This Man is calling for Elijah!”
Immediately someone and I didn’t who, ran over to My Lord and took a sponge,
filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed,
and offered it to Him to drink.
The rest said,
“Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”
And then finally My Lord cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit up to the Father.
Signs Accompanying Jesus’ Death
Then, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom;
and the earth quaked,
and the rocks were split,
and the graves were opened;
Then the centurion and those with him, who were guarding My Lord saw the earthquake and the things that had happened,
they struck with great fear, and they proclaimed,
“Truly this was the Son of God!”
And many the women who followed My Lord from Galilee,
ministering to Him,
were looking on from afar,
among whom were Mary (Mag - dah – lin) Magdalene,
Mary the mother of James
and (Hose – say – es) Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
Jesus is Buried
Now at the end of the day,
when evening had come,
there came a rich man from ( Air – rim – ma – thee - ah) Arimathea.
His name was Joseph, he had also become a disciple of Jesus.
By the evening light, Joseph went to Pilate and asked for my Lord’s body.
Immediately, Pilate commanded the body to be given to him.
Then Joseph took the body,
wrapped it in clean linen cloth,
laid it in his own personal new tomb
which he had hewn out of the rock;
as he left,
he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb.
Walking away he saw both Mary (Mag - dah – lin) Magdalene and the other Mary, sitting facing the tomb.
On the next day,
After the Day of Preparation,
the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, saying,
“Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’
Therefore we be of you,
command that the tomb be made secure until the 3rd day,
so His disciples don’t come by night and steal Him away,
and then claim to the people,
‘He has risen from the dead.’
Making the last deception worse than the first.”
Pilate said to them,
“You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.”
So they went and made the tomb secure,
sealing the stone,
Placing the guard so that no one could sneak past him and remove the body.
The Empty Tomb
Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn,
Mary (Mag - dah – lin) Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.
And behold, there was a great earthquake;
for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat right there on it.
His countenance was like lightning,
his clothing as white as snow.
And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.
But the angel answered and said to the women,
“Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
6 He is not here; for He is risen, as He said.
Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Then go quickly and tell His disciples that
HE IS RISEN FROM THE DEAD!!,
and He is going before you into Galilee;
there you will see Him.
Behold, I have told you.”
Both of them left quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy,
and ran to bring His disciples the word.
The Appearance of Jesus to the Women
And as they went to tell His disciples,
behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!”
So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him.
Then Jesus said to them,
“Do not be afraid.
Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee,
and there they will see Me.”
The Bribery of the Soldiers
Now while both Mary (Mag - dah – lin) and the other Mary were on their way to the city,
some of the guard came into the city
reporting to the chief priests all the things that had happened.
When the chief priests had assembled with the elders and consulted together,
they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying,
“Tell them, ‘His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.’
And if this comes to the governor’s ears,
we will appease him and make you secure.”
So the guards took the money and did as they were instructed;
and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
The Appearance of Jesus to the Disciples
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee,
to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.
When they saw Him,
they worshiped Him;
but some doubted.
The Great Commission
And Jesus came and spoke
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you;
and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
