Consider His Submission (vv.11-14)
Consider His Submission (vv.11-14)
The one Who spoke the world into existence, stands silent before His creation.
The one Whose hands formed man from the dust now willingly allows His hands to be bound.
He submitted to a trial before sinful men, because He was submitted to the will of the Father.
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.”
He took the cup of our sin, He suffered for our iniquities.
“Thus, taking a body like our own, because all our bodies were liable to the corruption of death, He surrendered to death in the place of all, and offered it to the Father. This He did out of sheer love for us, so that in His death all might die, and the law of death thereby be abolished… it was thereafter voided of its power for men.” - Athanasius
Consider His Suffering (vv. 26-44)
Consider His Suffering (vv. 26-44)
He bore the sin of the world. As was prophesied at his baptism by John.
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
He was beaten by the Jews (Matthew 26:66-69)
He was scourged by Pilate (v. 27)
He was mocked and mistreated by the soldiers.
He was cursed by the crowds.
With every blow, every stripe, every insult, with every hammer of the nails, the reproach of our sin was being laid upon Him. Hear the hammer clang, hear the mock and the insults, hear the shouts of the soldiers. See the Son of God raised up on the cross.
I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, Who walk in a way that is not good, According to their own thoughts;
Consider what Christ has suffered on your behalf and give thanks.
Consider His Solitude (vv. 45-49)
Consider His Solitude (vv. 45-49)
From the depth of despair He called out!
He felt separation such as had never occured in the history of the world. Forsaken! He knew the depths of hell in those hours.
