Let’s Pray
Intro: Today Jesus is inside the tomb, so we’re not going to be looking at what He was doing but rather the events that unfolded after.
So yesterday we went through the crucifixion and the death of Jesus on the cross.
Let’s pick it up right there in Matthew...
“Holy Week #7 Jesus in the Tomb"
Saturday
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
The temple had three main parts the courts, the Holy place (where only the priest could enter), and the Holy of Holies (reserved by God for himself).
The Holy of Holies is where the ark of the covenant rested and the high priest only went in once a year...
During the day of atonement they would make a sacrifice and ask for forgiveness of their sins on behalf of the nation.
So when Jesus breathed His last breath, they felt it all the way in the temple. The earth shook and the rocks were split.
By tearing the curtain in two from top to bottom, God showed that Jesus had opened the way for sinful people to reach a holy God.
Which allows you and I, access to the father today.
Lets drop down...
Jesus is Buried
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud
and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’
Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”
Listen I don’t know what was wrong with these guys, but after I witnessed all the miracles, lived through the earthquake, and saw the things He said would happen, happen. I don’t know about you but with all that I would be out.
It’s crazy to me how some will stop at nothing to prove God is not real.
Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.”
So being that today is Saturday the Sabbath, they were not supposed to be doing anything.
But they were adamant about this
So they broke their own law just to make sure they had watch on Jesus’s body.
So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.
They wanted to make sure Jesus was not coming back, they were so afraid they sent a guard to watch the tomb of a dead man.
And just think about that, they were paying attention to the words that came out of Jesus mouth when He was preaching.
People pay attention when we open are mouths and preach the Gospel.
Closing: Anyone have any thoughts tonight???
