He has risen! He has risen indeed!
WE: IDENTIFICATION (MAKE IT CLEAR THAT YOU STRUGGLE)
How do you know that?
There are those who would say today I would like to know but I have doubts.
How can we ever know for sure?
You look for proof. What proof do we have?
I know for sure! I would bet my life on it
Lets take a journey today
GOD: ILLUMINATION (THE GOAL IS TO RESOLVE THE TENSION
The Resurrection
20 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Late in the night, Early in the morning
20 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”
Early
The word used for early is prōi which was the technical word for the last of the four watches into which the night was divided, that which ran from 3 am to 6 am.
It was still the grey dark when Mary came, because she could no longer stay away.
The cool of the morning air, the birds are awake and singing. She might not have noticed much for grief, and love.Worry and fear, how she should get to the body. Who would roll the stone awayMary would not have traveled alone it was too dangerous They wanted to finis preparing the body. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus had been forced by circumstances to prepare His body hastily, and the
What did Mary see?
B. The tomb is open!
- I think she was blinded by grief worry and love
see: “to glance in, to look in.”
She did not know that an earthquake had occurred and the stone had been rolled away.
What did Mary see?
Stone rolled away… Emotions were high. Mary saw an assumption open tomb somebody stole the body.
- open safe somebody emptied it.
Rather than look in she ran to Peter and John.
Mary’s use of the pronoun “we” is interesting, for it included the other women who at that moment were discovering that Jesus was alive! (see Mark 16:1–8 and Luke 24:1–8
II. Ruling everybody is running
What do Peter and John see. Peter saw John running in this mad dash Peter was left in the dust.John gets there first
B. John sees
What did See?
5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in
When John arrived at the tomb, he cautiously remained outside and looked in.
What did John see? The grave clothes lying on the stone shelf without any evidence of violence or crime.
When John wrote this account, he used three different Greek words for seeing.
In John 20:5, the verb simply means “to glance in, to look in.” (Blepo)
Mary saw the stone moved away
6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;
In John 20:6, the word means “to look carefully, to observe.” 20:14
(Theoreo) to observe someth. with sustained attention, be a spectator, look at, observe, perceive, see
John sees and believes
8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;
The “saw” in John 20:8 means “to perceive with intelligent comprehension.”

Believed: John 20:31

Peter we do not know where he is at.
9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.

What do you see?… faith!
III. Round Three
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
A. Mary is still in the dark
Still outside and begins to look in.
- She saw angels but that didn’t seem like a big deal.
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
In John 20:6, the word means “to look carefully, to observe.” 20: 12
20:14
(Theoreo)
6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there
12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.
Mary sees angels and still not at the point of faith
14 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
In John 20:6, the word means “to look carefully, to observe.” 20:14
5 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.
B. Mary meets Jesus
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
- Mary hears her name and now she recognizes Jesus
“Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
She jumps and hugs Jesus.
What did she see…. Jesus
- Normally women would not be written into the script. The gospel is equally for all people
but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
III. What do you see?
A. People still trying to figure it out.
On the History Channel this week – The Shroud of Turin.
The shroud – believed to be the linen cloth used to wrap Jesus’ body when taken down from the cross.
The shroud was subjected to examination using the most advanced forensic techniques.
The marks on the shroud were measured and the data entered into a computer capable of converting the measurements into a three dimensional animation.
The result: His body was a mess –
not just holes from the nails in his hands and feet,
and the spear wound in his side,
but the evidence of cuts and bruises everywhere.
Another Result: From the marks on the shroud they have produced a three dimensional picture of what they believe is the closest rendering of what Jesus actually looked like.
Observation – He had a big nose.
Most significant discovery: By examining the fabric of the shroud they have discovered – the darkest and clearest markings on the shroud were not caused by blood or other body fluids or dirt.
The markings were caused by intense light!
Light that came from Jesus himself when he was raised from the dead!
At this point in the program the scientist was very emotional!
HE IS RISEN!
B. The god that change Joan, and John was real.
They had something real.I didn’tI wanted it.HE HAS RISEN!
John 11:25–26 (ESV)
25 Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.
YOU: APPLICATION (TELL PEOPLE WHAT TO DO AND WHAT THEY HAVE HEARD)
Conclusion:
What do you see?
What do you Believe?
