Praise # 2 9-24-95
We’re going to continue on the subject of “Praise, God’s untapped power.” Last week we said that there are mainly 7 different words that the translators render “Praise.” But each of these Hebrew words have a much fuller meaning, much more descriptive, then just praise.
I. Last week we took up the Hebrew word “YADAH.”
A. YADAH comes from a root word meaning “Extended Hand, to throw out the hand.”
1. Therefore, “YADAH” means to praise and worship with extended hand.
2. Yadah is an action word.
a. It’s an act of your will, throwing your hands upward in power.
i. This is a sign of total surrender and submission to God.
ii. It also means that you are trusting in Him.
b. “Yadah” also has to do with speaking, speaking out our praises to God with our hands lifted up.
B. There are several verses in the Word of God that tell us to lift our hands unto the Lord. (Psalm 63:4) Says, “Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.”
1. (Psalm 134:2) “Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD.”
a. It tells us in (PSA 141:2) the Lifting of hands was counted as the evening sacrifice.
2. Paul even says the same thing in the NT.
a. In (1 Timothy 2:8) it says, “I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.”
C. In (2CHROM 20) the children of Israel were going to be attacked by the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir.
1. Israel was out numbered.
2. Turn to 2CHORN 20:20-21
a. “Praise (YADAH) the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.”
i. The enemies of Israel were destroyed.
b. There is an untapped power in praise.
II. All right, that brings us to our 2nd word for praise “TOWDAH.”
A. “TOWDAH” comes from the same Hebrew root word as “YADAH” meaning the extension of the hands, but “TOWDAH” includes more.
1. Turn with me to PSA 50:23
a. He says, “Whoso offereth praise (TOWDAH) glorifieth me.”
2. It’s unfortunate that the KJV translates “TOWDAH” as just “Praise.”
a. The NASB does an excellent job in translating this V.
i. The NASB says, “He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God.” (Psalm 50:23)
b. The Strong’s says that “TOWDAH” means “Give praise to God, thanksgiving in songs of worship, hymn of praise, or in confession.”
i. “TOWDAH” can be “Thanksgiving in song by singing or in words only.”
3. “TOWDAH” can be thanking Him for the things that He has done, but it can also be thanking Him for things that we have not received yet. (Things promised in His Word.)
a. For instance in this V (PSA 50:23) He promises Salvation.
i. This Hebrew word for “Salvation” means, “deliverance, salvation, rescue, safety, welfare, prosperity, and victory.”
ii. God has promises us all of these things.
b. Turn to PHIL 4:4-6
i. When you ask God for something, you should be thanking Him for it.
ii. (Hebrews 10:23) Says, “He is faithful that promised.”
B. When you’re thanking Him for the things that you don’t even see yet, you’re operating in the Bible principle called “faith.”
1. Faith is simply taking God at His Word.
a. If He said it He will bring it to pass.
i. There are conditions to God’s promises.
ii. Just like in (PSA 50:23) God said that He would give us His salvation, deliverance, safety, and prosperity, if we would “ordereth our conversation aright.” In other words “live right.”
2. “TOWDAH” means “Thanking Him for the things that you have already received and for the things not yet received with arms lifted up.”
III. That brings us to the 3rd Hebrew word for praise and that is “HALAL.”
A. “HALAL” means “To shine, to boast, to show, to celebrate, to be noisily foolish, or clamorourly foolish.”
1. Generally, “HALAL” refers to speaking our praises, but not just a whisper. Some volume is involved and even some action.
a. It might be dancing unto the Lord, it might be waving of the arms, it might be spinning like a top as David did.
2. 1 of the definitions of the word “HALAL” is to “act madly, act like a madman.”
a. If the world saw you worshipping God in the “HALAL” type of worship, they would thing you’ve gone mad.
B. 1 interesting note about the Hebrew word “HALAL,” it’s been translated into the Greek language and into the English.
1. It’s a word the we know very well.
a. It’s the word “Hallelujah”
C. 2 CHRON 20:19-22
1. (The 1st 2 words rendered as praise is the Hebrew word “HALAL,” the last word rendered as Praise found in V 21 is the word “YADAH.”) (YADAH is to praise with arms lifted up.)
2. PSA 18:1-3
D. When you see a boy and girl in love with each other, especially if it’s there 1st love.
1. All they want to do is talk about the other person. The boy is always talking about how great his girlfriend is, how smart she is, how pretty she is.
a. When they’re together, no one else exists. When they’re apart, they're on the phone together. They’re always praising one another.
b. Everyone else looks at them and thinks they’re crazy.
i. They don’t think they are crazy, everyone else does.
2. That’s how we are to be with the Lord Jesus Christ.
a. Loving Him so much, praising Him, talking about Him, wanting to be with Him.
b. The world might thing that we are crazy, but we don’t.
