God Is Faithful

Isaiah 49:5–7 ESV
5 And now the Lord says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him— for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God has become my strength— 6 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” 7 Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation, the servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

Part Of His Character

God is Declared to be Faithful
Isaiah 49:7
Isaiah 49:7 ESV
7 Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation, the servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”
Context of Servant Passages
Light to Gentiles as well
Servant is for whole world
1 Corinthians 1:7-9
1 Corinthians 1:7–9 ESV
7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Context of grace of salvation you have received
Lack nothing and eagerly awaiting revelation/return of Lord
This Grace given you by God will affirm and assure the future
What allows such strong assurance?
Because God Is Faithful
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
1 Thessalonians 5:23–24 ESV
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

His Faithfulness Is Declared To Be

Some Qualities of God’s Faithfulness

Great

Lamentations 3:22–23 ESV
22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Incomparable

Psalm 89:8 ESV
8 O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you?
God is like no other
God is incomparable, hence His faithfulness is incomparable
While we let each other down, now matter how hard we try to be faithful, God will always be faithful

Unfailing

Psalm 89:33 ESV
33 but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness.
Context of having to correct/discipline descendants of David
He will not remove His covenant with the family
God will not deny Himself
2 Timothy 2:13 ESV
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
Reminds you that even when you fail, God remains faithful
Cornerstone to eternal security of the believer
It is God’s faithfulness that you rely upon, not yours!

His Faithfulness Is Manifested

God’s faithfulness is not just declared it is also manifested in

Keeping Covenant

Deuteronomy 7:9 ESV
9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
God has demonstrated/manifested His faithfulness by keeping His covenant with Israel

Fulfilling Promises

1 Kings 8:19–20 ESV
19 Nevertheless, you shall not build the house, but your son who shall be born to you shall build the house for my name.’ 20 Now the Lord has fulfilled his promise that he made. For I have risen in the place of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and I have built the house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.
God told David (Solomon’s Father) that he would not build the temple
Solomon is the son God chose and God fulfilled His promise

Forgiving Sins

1 John 1:9 ESV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
What does it say God will do?
You have the guarantee from God that if you confess your sins He will forgive and cleanse

Conclusion

Three Psalms which show us what the Psalmist did when confronted with the faithfulness of God’s mercies and love
Psalm 40:10 ESV
10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.
Psalm 92:2 ESV
2 to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night,
Psalm 89:1 ESV
1 I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

We Will Declare

You should be glad (and thankful) someone declared the faithfulness of God’s mercies with you
Psalm 89:1 is a good one to examine yourself with.
Am I making known God’s faithfulness to my generation?
Am I singing of the mercies of the Lord?
God’s Faithfulness should become characteristic of His saints
