All right, good morning. And welcome to Calvary Heights Baptist Church. We are with you live racist remarks are sermon this morning are so glad that you guys are with us today. Thankful. We have this ability to be gathered with one another to to be here with the Lord and be in his word. This morning's going to thank you guys for Fortuna Inn and being with us to be in Mark chapter 4. We look at the first 20 vs of Mark chapter 4 that's quite a chunk of scripture, but it's too great for the scriptures where Jesus really starts. The first I was in the gospel of Mark really start to resent lessons in Parables. And so we want to look kind of deeply at some of these today as we kind of dive-ins. Let's go ahead Chapter 4 verses 1 through 20 and then we'll get right into it. So here we are.

All right before starting with verse 1 and he began to teach the crowd beside the sea and a very large crowd gathered about him so that he got into a boat and set in set in it on the sea and the whole crowd was beside the Sea on the land and he was teaching the many things in parables. And in his teaching he said to them Listen Hold A sower went out to sow. And after you sold some of the seed fell along the path and the birds came and devoured it other seed fell on rocky soil where it did not have much soil other seed fell on Rocky ground. Where did not have much soil and immediately it sprang up since it had no depth of soil and when the sun rose it was scorched and since it had no root it withered away. other seed fell among thorns and the Thorns grew up and choked it and it yielded no grain and other seeds fell into good soil and produce strain growing up and increasing and yielding 30 fold and 6400 fold and he said he who has ears to hear Let Him hear and when he was alone those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. And he said to them to you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in Parables so that they may indeed see but not perceive and may indeed hear but not understand less they should turn and be forgiven. And he said to them do you not understand this Parable how then will you understand all the Parables the silver so's the word and these are the ones along the path where the word is so when they hear Satan immediately comes up and takes away the word that was sown in them. And these are the ones told on the on the rocky ground the ones who hear the ones who when they hear the word immediately receive it with joy and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while then when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word immediately they fall away. And others are the ones sought among thorns. They are those who hear the word but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and desires or for other things enter in and choke the word and it proves unfruitful. But those who were sold on the good soil. Are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit 30 fold and 60 fold and hundredfold.

So there we are mark one for tiling this are your ears working because Jesus says twice asking folks to listen and then he says he who has ears let him hear at the end of the parable. Let's go ahead and have some time of prayer before we kind of start digging into the word father. We thank you so much for the day. You've given us we thank you for this time. We have to be in your words this morning. We thank you that Jesus taught us so many things through parables in through other ways of of teaching Father we ask that as we we dive into this as you are working in our hearts and you're working in our midst of you would speak to our hearts that you would challenge us who would correct us. He would convict us where we need to the step forward and in to serve you and enter into do your will father. We ask is if we go into this time that it be you speaking. Just kind of put me aside. Let me be the mouthpiece for you an instrument in your hands and it not be with me. But if you have you follow me, thank you again for your word and and what it means to us and it's in Jesus name we pray. Amen. Alright, so we're in Mark chapter 4. And this is really kind of the first time that the gospel of Mark recordes a series of Parables. Jesus is teaching. Jesus has given some other perils before Market. They were kind of I call him mini Parable there a little short Snippets of a parable and they were different than these because these Parables did he gave prior to this specially in Chapter 2. We're very specific to the situation. It was kind of one of those. I hear somebody who doesn't get something. Let me give them a teachable moment and let me use this as an example kind of moment. It's a little Parable for a little bit different in that regard. Here specifically Jesus is surrounded by this large crowd that's gathered for the specific purpose to hear him preach other times. We see Parable specifically in Chapter 2. He gives a couple of Parables. Where is a parable about doing something specifically right after he had a gun a healing or are worked a miracle and so here it sits a little different. They're gathered to hear him preach in Parables, very interesting kind of genre with in the literature of scripture that there are little bit different how the rest of scripture works until that so for those who are heart hardened up her bones will serve as kind of a judgment warning and for those who are open to the word of God parables are instruction and there's a glimpse is beautiful glimpse into the Kingdom of Heaven into the price Kingdom. That is it is to come in so that What we're seeing here with Parable. So Parables have several characteristics were going to going to look through those the first characteristic of Parables is that they provide insight into the nature coming growth and consummation of the kingdom of God. That means that they're going to be giving those who are listening to a really open to the word likely sharing what Jesus's full Kingdom will be like that's an important part of what Parables will do. They are butts by design by Jesus's in God's holy design it the parables are this kind of provocative and surprising. Way of teaching and telling a story that there's there's a there's going to be something in that Parable that kind of makes people pick up a little bit ago. What what just happened here. So it's that kind of provocative a surprising moment. I used to stimulate thinking and cause contemplation within the hearer. What are the things that we see through a scripture really, especially the New Testament is the idea of reasoning out the word of God to start to think deeply about the word of God in parables are designed to do that to make people not just hear the word and just kind of taking in but it's to think about it to ponder it to two really Think hard and think deeply about what you're being taught and what the word of God says. Parables used everyday items to teach a spiritual truth. So here we see this solar this farmer, right and he's out broadcast broadcast sewing out of seeing, you know, just like you would if you're trying to receive the grass in your yard, if it gets on the sidewalk he gets on the sidewalk if it gets up in the flower beds while he's not to worry about it. This is an everyday kind of Experience that everyone would have been familiar with the trick of the parable is it there's a Twist at the end that there's something new that Jesus is going to add something to make you go away. I didn't quite see that coming with the parable. Pebbles also reveal more Truth for those who are receptive of those who are are digging into the word of God. They're going to receive more from a parable than those who are hardened to the work of God or to the word of God. So does Parables reveal more truth to those who are receptive yet. They hide truth from others who are not receptive to the word of God. This was just kind of a fun interesting fact. We're using a commentary from Danny Akin and and he pointed out the Parables make up 35% of Jesus's teaching in the south of a little more than a third of all the Jesus teaches us come to us in the form of Parables. So is that a third of all your teaching? I have been teaching Elementary school-age children for 20 plus years now and I think about a third of my teachings a significant amount of what I do and so it's really important that we understand and in dig into Parables if that's a third of the teaching of Christ.

Parables typically focus on a single truth. We should not make Parables alloy. That means that we look at that single truth. What is the overarching theme? What is the overarching truth of this Parable? We don't want to go try to grab every little detail out of the parable and then try to make it some sort of a Nuance. That's maybe not really there. And so that's something to think about with not making the parable and allegory. Repairables will always point us to Jesus is God's Messiah and I'll call us to make a personal decision concerning Jesus Christ that that's a huge part of what Parables do for us. What's let's go ahead and dig in to the parable get the verse 3 of chapter 4. That is where we see. Really the parable beginning that that's that's what Jesus starts to actually teach the actual Parable. So this Parable Jesus calls us first to listen closely. He says listen, right the very beginning. So we need a spiritually alert heart and a hungry mind to understand Jesus teaching and that's key to Parables right now. This is interesting because it's often called if you if you've got your Bible open the Mark chapter 4 get the little headings up there and is often called the parable of the sower.

I understand calling at the parable of the sower and I've even called the Parable Store because that's what a lot of people think of it as but it's really a parable about soils at as we're really kind of looking at this as we read through that parallel verses 1 through 9 what we really see yours that the parable focuses on these sober on the soils and the types of soils are not so much a focus on the actual sober himself as well as pretty important for us to look at verse 4. Kind of lets us know what the soils are. So the soils here verse for is is soil along the path I can say to figure out just trying to fill in the patches in your yard Lee and I had to buy some grass seed just this this weekend. Veteran came through you know, if you're in Martinsville, you know, the veterans doing a lot of good work in and getting our gas lines updated in the infrastructure. They are but a little extra headache for Homeowner says we got to go back in and Patch everything where they have dug up holes our yard to get new gas lines and so brought out some new new seed for the grass to plant. So well, it's right next to the sidewalk. So there's going to be getting on the sidewalk. That's the soil along the path. Verse 5 is rocky soil soil. That's just got so many rocks in it that the nothing's going to take real root here for seven is soil with weeds and Thorns. The scripture uses the word forms here with that. I can also be weeds that just choked out in EC growing at an inverse 8. We see this good soil come up and that's the good for that's that's what you want to play as for your flower beds would be that's for your your veggie garden be in that good soil. In verse 9 Jesus closes out the parabola kind of the same way. He opens it right inverse 90 actually says he who has ears let to hear Let Him hear is that it's a challenge to listen to the words and into think through it. We we talk to our students at the elementary level or the Middle School level type of active listening, you know, being attentive to listening not just I heard you but really listening taking it in. The end of the pond or the story for a bit to the really slow down and see what's going on.

So there's some key players here, right the seed that that is being sung by the sword is the gospel. The source of the followers of Jesus that the Harvester here is God and that's really important for us to understand that that's Harvesters got so is as we the followers of Jesus Christ are called to spread that seed called the spread it generously who is the president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in is Coventry actually uses the word promiscuous late like spread to everybody. Ladidadida. Everybody get get the word out there. Make sure that people are hearing the word of God frequently that the gospel is spread amongst everyone take it everywhere. Tell everyone.

And just like this the gospel message will break in this world much like the soil here is being sewn to the farmer that it's going to fall and various places. It's going to have various responses other sponsor. That's not even our concern. Where are the sores I'm thinking about this story and I'm thinking about the soldier who goes out and he he sews along the path you so is long and rocky soil. He sews along and weeds and thorns. No Discerning farmer is going to do that. They're going to look for that good soil first and foremost an and only Jesus in this regard as telling us to not be so Discerning when were spreading the gospel. It were to take it everywhere share with anyone. We don't know what kind of soil were actually sewing in. We're just to spread it. We're just a sin that feed out. And so that's really important that this the response is not our concern. God himself. Is responsible for the Harvest. We're just to be workers in the field. Our job is to Simply so the seed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and we must spread the gospel so that people might hear if we're not spreading the gospel. It will never know what kind of soil there is will never be putting it anywhere. Now we kind of move on and we think about this this this seems pretty obvious to us. Right that that's okay. I can get that. There's a sower right and and and he's got some seeds and he's got so I'm supposed to be like the sower and I'm supposed to spread out and I'm just supposed to make sure that everything's broadcast out there that I get the gospel message of Jesus out to people who need to hear the gospel message of Jesus makes it easy to go. Then we get the verses 10 through 12 verses 10 through 12 make this kind of interesting bridge between the parable itself and the explanation of the parable that begins in verse 14. This is one of those hard sayings of Jesus not actually just going to take I'll look I'm going to try to move some stuff around here so I can get to that but this one was hard sayings of Jesus things that we know that Jesus said and so we know it must be true. But it's really tricky or difficult to understand. So jesus takes his closest followers aside for this. This is not something he does out in front of a big crowd. This is not something he's doing where everybody's hearing it. This is it a time aside. This is a time for deeper teaching little closer fellowship. If you would see those who desire more of Jesus and more of his teachings will receive the inside of the kingdom of God, but those are outside of that Circle. See, they're only going to get more Parables. They're not going to get those explanations. And that's what's Happening Here. We'll take a quick look at it verses 10 through 12 and it says and when he was alone those around him with the 12 asked him about The Parables and he said to them to you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God look for those outside. Everything is comparable so that they may indeed see but not perceive and they may indeed hear but not understand less they should turn and be forgiven now, that sounds So odd to the character of Jesus in summerguard What's Happening Here is Jesus's quoting Isaiah 6 verses 9 through 10 in verse 12. That's what this verse in Isaiah describes the hard hardness of the people of Israel. At the time that did Isaiah's writing this the people of Israel had turned completely to God they were they were absorbed with themselves and following the rule of God without loving and knowing god and in so they really stopped following the rule. They kind of taking it to the nth degree of how far can we get away with it? And so As Jesus is talk about this hard-heartedness and Israel here is emphasizing the fact that Jesus speaks in parables. To the hard to those who are hard-hearted outside and it's a prophetic warning for them is he's giving them a warning in this that they eat because you're a hard-hearted. You're not going to understand what's happening. You're not going to see this. You're going to reject.

The possibility of forgiveness because of your hard-heartedness and it also demonstrates Twisted. The scripture is being fulfilled in Jesus Christ himself. So as we're spreading the gospels were sharing the word of Jesus Christ. What we need to understand is it is it it's offencive the gospel offends the resistant in the rebellious and there's nothing we can do about that went when truth is told the people who don't want to hear truth.

They get offended by it. Even when that truth is told in the most loving man, or you can possibly say they're still upset and offended by it. See the thing about the gospel is this that it is gladly received by those who are receptive. Now I understand this. Those are rebellious and resistant to the gospel are not deny the possibility of belief. That's not what's happening here in verses 10 through 12. They are not deny the possibility of believe but if they remain persistent in their unbelief, if they remain hard Hardin and they're not going to receive any more evidence of the work of the Gospel. They're just not going to see that they're going to they're going to Blind themselves and summerguard to that. See this is this is what we're calling to so that when we love the word of God, we're going to get more satisfaction in God, but if you refuse the word of God. Any then the understanding you currently have will be just kind of taken away. If we do not listen to the word. We cannot benefit from the word of God.

Then in verses 13 through kind of the entry we see that Jesus starts to explain the parable is this explanation in the first thing we see here is that the seed that falls on the path? So In verse 13 Jesus kind of gently skulls. Those are all kind of gathered together. He he lets them know that this particular Parable is is one of the basics to understanding this Parable is foundational the without understanding that this Parable they're not going to understand the other Parables with the flu. This is that again that he to listen closely pay attention what's going on and then go into the sea into the individual season starts talking about them two verses 14 and 15. He's he's actually going back and recalling what he said and verse 4 and that's explains to see the falls on the paths will the path represents those who are hard hard and tough minded individuals right? These people dismiss the word of God. This is not what we can do about that the soil of some hearts is hard, but what's beautiful about this is the farmer still sews the farmer size enough Faith to still be out there sewing The farmer still sews even around the heart of hearts. We look at verses 16 through 17 in and they go back to looking at verses 5 and 6 and Jesus now explaining that that seed that falls in the rocky soil who the soil is welcoming. Right, but they do not have enough substance. To maintain the seed for growth to these people have a shallow face with no real Roots once once trials and tribulations and persecution and trouble start to come their way. They're going to fall away. Pastor Mark Dever refers to it as this what he refers to these people as those who are quickly green and then quickly gone and we see that the hearts of our the some soil. And some of the soil of some hearts we get it said right here. We see the soil of some hearts is shallow. There's nothing there for the routes to develop. It's a shallow soil, but the farmer still sews. Armor still sews even when he knows the swallow some hearts is shallow.

Verses 18 and 19 kind of go back to her seven and there were referring to that explains the seas in the thorny soil. So these folks received the gospel better than the first two groups. They really do but they're easily distracted.

The distractions coming worried that come in well for they come for the desire of other things they they they have a partial commitment. But here's the problem of partial commitment partial commitment is really no commitment at all. Think about that a moment. We would have to be committed to things right if I'm if I'm only partially committed to my job. I'm not really committed to my job, right? I'm going to show up Monday Wednesday Friday and in and do what I'm supposed to be able to take every Tuesday Thursday off or I'm I'm only going to be here Monday through Thursday for my job. Is that really commitment to the work? First Amendment to the work I'm going to be here when I'm supposed to be here and I'm going to do a little bit of the extra to make sure that I'm doing my job well. See if there's only partial commitment. There's really no true commitment at all that's important for us to see in this and it's kind of what's Happening Here with the folks that have the thorny soil these people. The present life is more important to them than the life to come. Right stuff is more important than the Savior cash will bring them more pleasure than Christ. They have more pleasure in their Cravings than they have in their creator. We see here that the soil of some hearts is very easily distracted. But again in the story what we see is the farmer still sews. This does not seem to bother the farmer doll. So he's he's been through so I'm on the path still so been through rocky soil the farmer still sews been through weedy Forney soil. The farmer still says

First one we wind up in the good soil. Right and I goes back to vs8 the good soil here. This is those who hear the word of God accept it and bear fruit. They are not distracted by the world around them their troubles in their trials. Do not deter them. They're active listeners. They pursue the word with enthusiasm and Zeal. They allow the word of God to take root and they celebrate it's amazing and abundant growth in their life. This this is great that they're rooted in their growing and they continue to grow and these are the people that are going to produce more when we think about sowing seed part of the idea of Swing seat is to produce fruit. What is fruit produce more seed to sow So as as these folks are spreading the seed in there, they're spreading the gospel. They're there their and they're grounded. Others are going to also then become bearers of the Gospel as well. That's that's the promise here that comes with receiving God's word that the God's word will grow and produce fruit a Christian.

A Christian who is not producing fruit. It's not a real thing. An apple tree that doesn't produce apples. Is it really an apple tree? A tomato plant that doesn't give you Tomatoes. Is it really a tomato plant?

It's no good to the kingdom. If you claim Christ and you're not producing fruit. Are you any good to the kingdom a Christian is not producing fruit is not a real thing. It doesn't happen. John 15-5 says that he says Jesus here speaking and he's talking about this very similar kind of, because I am the branch. I am the vine and you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him he it is that bears much fruit.

for apart from me you can do nothing. If you're not producing fruit, you are not connected to God's power through his word. Jesus is Calling to us here is calling for us to hear the word is calling for us to respond to the Lord is calling for us to share the word. That is to share the gospel. Send the cares of the world opposition to the Kingdom Hall of that stuff can hamper Kingdom growth? But the Cure of it to that is to be in the word of God to we are people of the word of God. So I asked here get it is probably what Jesus has he he didn't say it in midwestern vernacular, but I have to ask are you years working? I heard a lot of the kid who was the same as saying he who has ears let him hear right? Are yours working to have ears that hear are you tuning in to the words of scripture or are you tuning them out? What do you think about this? This is this kind of a rat or our towns are call to action today called action. That is to be greedy for the word. Matt sounds really odd. We're not supposed to be stingy when I'm supposed to be selfish. I'm not saying to be selfish here cuz that's clearly not what we do through but to be greedy for it to want it to desire it to to just be hungry for it. I want you to dive into the word right? I wouldn't think about the word of God. As this meal write the two Diamond the word of God like a man who hasn't eaten for days but has been given bread and soup. You just can't get enough be that kind of greedy for it. I think of a family gathering for it seemed like the food whenever and we could go back for 4th. Sometimes V when I was a kid. It was church potlucks it we're all missing right now that that you can do the same. We should be doing that with the word of God going back for 4th 5th 6th. We should be so greedy for that. We never get our fill of the word of God. Cuz we need to know that the word of God. Is life sustaining that it's important if you're a follower of Jesus Christ. And you're not diving into the word of God, you're not you're not feasting on it and then sewing out the word of God elsewhere. You need to fix that you need to get right with that. You need to be doing that. But maybe maybe you've not heard the kind of message before maybe that's something kind of new to you. Maybe maybe this idea of the Gospel is is unfamiliar with this is because the gospel super important. Jesus is talking about the gospel here in this in this Parable that the seed is the gospel message in the gospel messages that the gods had designed the world around us to be perfect. Right the gods design in it. We see we see Beauty in God's design. We see purpose we see evidence of that all around us. When we read scripture, we see that that. Originally planned a world that would work perfectly for everything fit together. It was harmonious. It was perfect. God made each of us with a purpose and that purpose was to worship Him and a walk with Him scripture says in Genesis 1:31 that God saw the all they had made and it was very good Psalm 19:1. This is the heavens declare the glory of God in the skies proclaim the work of his hands. What Senator the end of the world? Right cylinders in the world are life doesn't work. We were supposed to send us this idea that we ignore God we ignore his original design for life. We selfishly insist on doing things our own way. The Bible calls us then. All right. That's just what it is. We all said, we all distort the original design. We're off wandering away from God. We rebelled against the holy and righteous and just God the consequences for sin is separation from God in this life. And for all of eternity Romans, 3:23 says it that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 6:23 reminds us that the wages we learn from our own sin is death.

Annette centralized crates Brokenness Is it that we're all Broken Vessels? Trying to figure out how to pack yourself back together and that Brokenness sense for us to to Chicago realize that things aren't working it. And so we go to look for a way out. We try to find ways to to fix things on her own good looking many different directions trying to figure out things on her own in in that broken is least should lead us to a place where we realize there's a need for something greater our lives. In Romans, 1:25 says the that we the people God's created. people that we exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worship and serve something created instead of worshipping the Creator.

I need to get back to that. So so we need a remedy for that. We need some good news and because of his love God did not leave us in our Brokenness, right? God loves us enough that that he sent a remedy in the form of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is God In the Flesh. He came to us live perfectly according to God's design. Jesus came to rescue us to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. He took our sin. He took our shame and he took it to the cross and he paid the penalty for arson by his own death. See Jesus was raised from the dead to provide. The only way for us to be rescued and restored to relationship with God John. 3:16 Says this that the God so loved the world in this way that he gave us his one and only son his only begotten in Colossians 2:4 or 2:14 and says that he erased the certificate of death And he is taking it out of the way by nailing it to the Cross we deserved to die for the sin. We we had but Jesus paid for that in our place.

So we hear that gospel message that they got some messages Jesus here and Mark for song about those of us who believe it is time for us to the so that out see that many calls for us to repent and believe right. She just hearing that good news is that ass really good enough. We have to admit our sinful broken if we have to stop trusting ourselves and in and we don't have the power to do that. I don't turn from from my ways of wanting to do things. We don't like change. We can't change things than ourselves. We have to be rescued. We must ask God to forgive us turning from our sin trusting in Jesus and that's what it means to repent and believe that then we just thank God I've said I I know that I'm far from you. I want to be brought close to I believe what the scripture say about who Jesus prices and I believe that he did what he did to forgive me. I asked for that forgiveness and God will start to work in your life. If you really mean a prayer like that you really mean a call out like that in your life to change you believing receive new life through Jesus Christ and God turns our lives around in a New Direction Mark 1:15, when we were there it says that we repent and believe in the good news and Ephesians 2:8 and 9 + free are saved by grace through faith. And this is not from yourselves. It is God's Gift not from work, so that no one can boast. There's nothing I can do to save myself. It is only what God does through me that saves me. It is his gift to me that gift of Salvation and Romans 10:9 says if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved.

That leaves us to this idea of recover and pursue and it's really kind of what today was about as well. Then when God restores our relationship to him week, we begin to discover meaning and new purpose in a broken world. We can we can pursue God's design and all of our areas of our life we can dig into the word to know what God would have for us and it will make sense us our eyes will be a loom in their hearts will be opened to the word of God.

Even when we fall we understand God's Pathway to be restored. This is the same good news of Jesus Christ at the gospel. Does this in our lives got Spirit empowers us to pursue his design and to assure us of his presence in this life and for the rest of Eternity. Philippians 2:13 says Ford is God who is working in you enabling you both to desire and to work out his good purpose and Ephesians 2:10. It says for we are his creation created in Christ Jesus for good works. Which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.

So now what? Now you've heard this good news and God wants you to respond to him. You can talk to him using words like this. Just just call out my last broke and I recognize it because of my sin. I need you got. You can reason to say I believe Jesus came to live die and was raised from the dead to rescue me for my sin. You just simply say forgive me. I turn for my selfish ways and and put my trust in you. I know that Jesus is Lord of all and I will follow him. I remember sharing this message with it with a lady one time and and I'm as I'm sharing it with her. She just she got overcome and she just cried out. Fix me. And he did it doesn't have to be a huge drawn-out thing. It just needs to be Earnest and honest in a plea to up to the god of creation who loves you and wants to restore you to him. Scripture says in Romans 10:9 again. If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved and in Romans 10:13 for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. This is this is what God has to offer us.

That we have this. So we start to develop in a healthy relationship with God through prayer through being a part of the local church through through time in the Bible study. And then we share it just like like we have seen here with the sower. The sower had been through all this process and is just sharing the gospel with others and that's where we come to today and that's what's going to be important for us.

is it kind of wrapping clothes we want we want to think about that if if you have Heard this message today and in you have questions and you want to know more about what was presented you want to know about this gospel message.
