We’re going to continue on the book of Romans today, so let’s jump right in to it.
I. ROM 9:6-9
A. Paul says in (V 6) “For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel.”
1. Paul brings out this point again, as he did in an earlier chapter.
2. Just because you are a Jew does not make you a spiritual Jew.
a. The true Israel are those that have made Jesus their Lord and Saviour.
3. ROM 9:10-13
a. In these Vs Paul is saying that God chooses His children, weather it be the children of Israel, or you and I, as the children of promise.
i. How does God pick and chose His children?
ii. Through His foreknowledge of who would place their faith in Him.
4. ROM 9:14-18
a. In (V 14) Paul ask the question, “Is there any unrighteousness in God?”
b. The reason that He asks that question is that there are times that God will have mercy on someone, but not on the next one.
i. Healing 1 that is not saved, but not healing the other.
c. As Paul goes on, he talks about Pharaoh and how that God raised him up so that God could show His power through him.
i. God can show His power and even the gifts of the Spirit at any time.
ii. God’s plan does not rely on a person to fulfill His plan.
iii. Yet Pharaoh played an important part in the release of Israel. But Pharaoh was not a puppet and neither are we.
5. ROM 9:19-21
a. Sometimes people question God about different things.
i. It’s all right to ask God why something happened, but to come against His will is wrong.
b. The question is, “How do I know what God’s will is then?”
i. Through the Word of God.
ii. In the Word of God we can see that God wants us to prosper, to be in health, to live a victorious life.
c. But there are some specific things that God wants us to do.
i. He calls some to be apostles, others he calls to serve in the church and some will even be cleaning the toilets.
ii. But if we all do what we are supposed to do we all will receive the same reward.
B. ROM 9:22-26
1. In these Vs Paul in now explaining what he has been talking about.
a. Not all Israel is Israel. (Spiritual Israel)
i. Even though Israel is God’s chosen people, if they do not except Jesus as Lord and Saviour they will be rejected.
ii. And that goes for the Gentiles.
iii. The true spiritual Israel are those that receive Jesus as Lord.
2. ROM 9:27-29
a. Even though the Jews are numbered as the sands of the sea, only a remnant shall be saved.
i. Not everyone will be saved.
II. ROM 9:30-33
A. What Paul is saying here in these Vs is that the Jews who try to obtain righteousness by keep the law, will not receive salvation.
1. But the Gentiles and Jews that put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will have righteousness and salvation.
a. ROM 9:33 (again)
i. Who is the stumblingstone?
ii. The Lord Jesus Christ.
iii. Jesus did not meet the Jews idea of the Messiah, so they did not except Him.
iv. He was there stumblingstone.
b. But whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
i. They will have eternal life.
B. ROM 10:1-4
1. 1st of all, Paul says in (V 1) that his desire and prayer is for Israel to be saved.
a. He saying the same thing that he said in (ROM 9:3)
b. In (V 2) he says that their zeal that they have for God is not based on knowledge.
i. The word “KNOWLEDGE” is the Greek word “EPIGNOSIS” which means “An intense and a full knowledge.”
ii. In the NT, most of the time this word “EPIGNOSIS” refers to a knowledge of God.”
c. The Jews do have a knowledge of God, but their knowledge is limited to that of the OT.
i. They rejected the works of Jesus and the writing of the Apostles, which would have given them a fuller knowledge of God.
2. In (V 3) Paul says that the Jews are “Ignorant of God’s righteousness and established their own.”
a. (Isaiah 64:6) Says, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.”
i. Paul then goes on to say in (ROM 10:3) “They have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”
b. God’s righteousness only comes to us through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. In (V 4) Paul says that “Christ is the end of the law.”
a. Jesus fulfilled the law by His sinless life.
b. Now righteousness is provided to everyone that believes on Him.
C. ROM 10:5-8
1. In these Vs Paul is using many quotes from Moses, mostly from (DEUT 30:1-14).
a. In (V 5) Paul is saying that if you’re going to do the law (in other words “Keep the law”) you’re going to have to live by it.
i. But no man could keep the law.
2. Then in (V 6) Paul says “Righteousness which is by faith.”
a. Then Paul goes on to quote Moses by saying ROM 6b-9.
b. Again this is a quote from (DEUT 30:12-14).
i. The point that Paul was trying to make was that Moses was trying to get the people to walk by faith in God.
ii. (DEUT 30) is filled with promises from God for those that would walk with Him.
iii. (DEUT 30:10) Says that these promises are yours if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.”
iv. Simple faith says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart.”
D. Look at ROM 10:8 again.
1. “The Word” is the Greek word “Rhema” meaning “The spoken living Word of God.”
a. We could go on from here with a whole message on CONFESSION.
i. Paul is saying that the Word of God should be coming out of our mouths.
2. (Proverbs 18:21) Says “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
