We’re going to continue on the subject of the book of Romans. We finished the 1st 4 chapters and we’re on chapter 5, so let’s pick up from right there.

     I. ROM 5:1

              A. He says that now we have peace with God because we have put our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

                        1. ROM 5:10

                                  a. (EPH 2:16) Says, “And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby.”

                        2. And now as (ROM 5:1) tells us “We are at peace with God.”

              B. ROM 5:2-5

                        1. In (V 2) he tells us that we have access to the Grace of God by faith.

                                  a. (HEB 4:16) Says, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

                                  b. Through faith we can go to God and get the Grace that we need.

                        2. Then in (Vs 3 and 4) he declares that “They glory in tribulations.”

                                  a. Tribulation rightly endured will bring patience.

                                  b. And when patience comes it then brings God’s approval.

                                           i. In (V 4) it says, “And patience, experience; and experience, hope.”

                                           ii. The word “Experience” means “approvedness or approval.”

                                           iii. Literally what (V 4) is saying, “And patience, APPROVAL; and APPROVAL, HOPE.”

                                  c. Patience brings God’s approval, and with God’s approval you have hope in every situation.

                                d. And because we do have that hope or that assurance of our salvation and God’s promises, then we are not ashamed.

                                           i. In (V 5) he says, “The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

                                           ii. The Wuest Translation says, “The love of God has been poured out in our hearts and still floods them through the H.S. who was given to us.”

                        3. This is all referring to the great love that God has for us and that our hope and trust are not misplaced when it is in God.

                                  a. God will not fail us, because we have the assurance of His great love.

              C. In these 5 Vs we see 5 reasons why we should glory in tribulation:

                        1. In V 1 it tells us that we have justification.

                        2. Also in V 1 it says that we are at peace with God.

                        3. In V 2 it tells us that we have access to the grace of God.

                        4. Then in V 5 it says that we have the love of God in our hearts.

                        5. And # 5 it tells us in that same V (5) that we have the H.S.

                                  a. That’s a formula for victory.

              D. Just a little side thought about the love of God being shed abroad in our hearts.

                        1. Now that we have that love, we are to let that love shine.

                                  a. Jesus said in (MATT 5:44) “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”

                                  b. We are to be imitators of God, God so loved the sinner that He died for them.

                                           i. We need to be willing to give of our selves, even to the ungodly, and let our light shine.

     II. ROM 5:6-11

              A. In (V 6) when he says, “For when we were yet without strength.”

                        1. He’s saying that we were weak spiritually.

                                  a. We were unable to keep the law and there was no hope for salvation.

                                           i. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

                        2. But then he says, “In due time Christ died for the ungodly.”

                                  a. “In due time," means “At the proper time.”

                                  b. “Christ died for the ungodly” Through the Lord Jesus Christ, His sufferings, death, burial, and resurrection, we now can have salvation through faith in Jesus.

              B. In the 1st half of (V 7) Paul says, “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die.”

                        1. If you think of 1 person that is a born again Christian other than a preacher or family, and ask yourself would I die for that person so that they could live.

                                  a. If you're honest with yourself your answer would probably be NO.

                        2. Then he says, “Yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.”

                                  a. The good man that he’s talking about is someone that has been a blessing to you in some way,

                                  b. I like how the AMP translation puts it, “Now it is an extraordinary thing for one to give his life even for an upright man, though perhaps for a noble and lovable and generous benefactor someone might even dare to die.”

                        3. Then in V 8 he says, ....(read)

                                  a. Christ died for us when we were His enemies.

              C. In (V 9) Paul said, “We shall be saved from wrath through Him.”

                        1. We know that there is a wrath of God but we will be saved from that wrath to come.

              D. In (V 10) Paul makes the statement “We shall be saved by His life.”

                        1. Saved from what? Saved from spiritual death.

                                  a. In other words Paul is saying, “We shall live by His life.”

                        2. JOHN 14:19

                                  a. HEB 7:25

                                  b. Without Jesus being alive, there would be no hope for us.

                                           i. I like how the NIV put it (Hebrews 7:25) “Therefore he is able to save completely {Or [forever]} those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” (NIV)

                        3. (REV 1:18) Says, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

                                  a. Jesus said that He is alive for evermore.

                                  b. It’s because He lives, we can have life for evermore.

              E. In (ROM 5:11) Paul said, “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.”

                        1. The word “atonement” in this V is really “reconciliation.”

                                  a. Almost every translation says reconciliation, the KJV is the only 1 that I could find atonement.

                                  b. There is a difference, “Atonement” means “covering up of sin,” but when we were reconciled back to God all our sins were gone, washed away, as if they never existed.

     III. ROM 5:12

              A. When he says, “By one man sin...” it is referring to Adam and his sin.

                        1. When Adam sinned it caused the sin nature was pasted upon everyone.

                                  a. Adam was the 1st man, and his sin caused the sin nature to be passed on to all of his children.

              B. ROM 5:13-14

                        1. In (V 13) he’s saying that sin was not imputed as a direct violation of the law because the law was not yet given.

                        2. Then in (V 14) he says, “Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses,” (that’s the time that no law was given, death still reigned because of sin.)

                                  a. So he’s saying that all have sinned weather they had the law or not.

              C. ROM 5:15

                        1. In this V Paul is saying that both Adam and the Lord Jesus Christ gave us a gift.

                                  a. One was the gift of death,(through Adam) and the other was the gift of eternal life, (through Jesus).

                                  b. When Paul said, “Much more the grace of God," in referring to what we have in Christ.

                                           i. It means that we now have more than what we had before Adam ever sinned.

                                           ii. Now we have a better covenant than that of old. (according to HEB 8:6)

                                           iii. We are now the Sons and Daughters of God. Never in history did that ever happen before the cross.

                                           iv. The work of Jesus on that cross was much greater than the work of the Devil in the garden.

     IV. ROM 5:16-17

              A. (V 17) literally says, “Much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness in life shall reign as kings through the One, Jesus.”

                        1. This whole V is talking about this life now that we’re living.

              B. ROM 5:18-21

                        1. Praise God that Grace did much more abound that we might be made righteous unto eternal life through the Lord Jesus Christ.
