So what next

Today we jump between Luke and Matthews account
Jesus appeared to his disciples which terrified them, which is why Jesus told them (Verse 36)

“May peace be with you!”

He ate some food to prove he wasnt a ghost (24:38-43)

45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46He told them, “This is what is written. The Christ will suffer. He will rise from the dead on the third day. 47His followers will preach in his name. They will tell others to turn away from their sins and be forgiven. People from every nation will hear it, beginning at Jerusalem. 48You have seen these things with your own eyes.

Jesus is saying that all of the Old Testament points to his death and resurrection,.
Another way of translating Jesus words would be to say that
IN THIS WAY SCRIPTURE IS WRITTEN THAT THE CHRIST MUST SUFFER, THEN ON THE 3RD DAY BE RISEN!
So Jesus wasn’t just quoting a verse (like Isaiah 53, Psalm 22 or Psalm 16
But he was saying that His death and resurrection summarizes the Entire Old Testament!
In fact we are told that all of the Old Testament prophets spoke by the Spirit of Jesus (1 Peter1:10-12)
and that all of them pointed to the Gospel ( or Good News) of what Jesus would do (Romans 1:2-3)
So what were they supposed to do with this good news, well this is where we will look at what Matthew records.
40 days after His Resurrection (Acts 1:3) and after appearing to over 500 people (1 Corinthians 15:3-6)
Jesus went back up, or ascended to heaven where he sat down at the right hand of the father.
But before he went he back he told his disciples to gather on a mountain and he would tell them what they were supposed to do now (Matthew 28:18-20)

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19So you must go and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 20Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end.”

Jesus tells his disciples, that
He has all authority in heaven and on earth, the whole universe
because he has that authority they should :
Go and make disciples, as people who follow Jesus go about their lives they should be telling other people about him,
The disciples they make should be baptized, this is a washing in water that churches do in the name of the Father, Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit) to publicly show someone is a part of Gods people.
Those disciples should be taught more about when he has done, and how they should live.
Jesus caps off this talk by promising to be with His people till the very end, which is a bit of a throw back to the start of Matthews Gospel where Jesus is called Immanuel, God with us (Matt 1:23)
Tomorrow we are going to look at how Jesus disciples followed these instructions in the second book written by Luke, the Books of Acts
