Hope Restored
The Fall
God came pursuing them while they hid in shame.
God’s pursuit of man John 3:16
God created us to have a relationship with him. Sin separated us from God and destroyed the relationship. Jesus died to pay that debt. He rose so we could have a relationship with him.
Through death and resurrection God has done all he can to bring reconciliation with man.
The Prodigal Son-the son who went his own way finally returned to his father.
Peter- the disciple who tried it his own way returns to Jesus
The result of the resurrection is relationship.
READ John 21:15-17
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

Peter’s 3 Denials
3 Evidences of Repentance
Surrender
Surrender
Repentance is replacing your will with God’s will.
It’s not remorse.
ILL- Hannah running after dogs - felt bad she got in trouble but wanted down to run back.
Tears are not repentance.
Repentance requires a change of direction.
Peter had a very strong will.
21:15 (these=other disciples)
He argued with James and John about who would sit at the right hand of Jesus.
He argued with Jesus about denying him.
Matthew 26:33
Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.”
John 13:37
Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
Peter’s attitude here is totally different than when he sat with Jesus for the Last Supper.
Peter jumps out of the boat and never goes back even after Jesus tells him that he will die following him.
Confession
Confession
Peter gets a lot of attention for his confession when Jesus asks, “who do you say that I am”
Peter responds, “Thou art the Christ, the son of the living God.”
That was a confession of knowledge.
Peter’s confession here is one of relationship, love.
Yes Lord I love you!
3 Opportunities for Peter to declare his love/ after 3 failures to show his love.
2 words for love in this passage
Agape- unconditional love- but used in a generic way by the time of Jesus.
Phileo- brotherly love/ relationship love.
John 16:27
for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
- phileo is used of God's love toward those who believe in Jesus.
Phileo is a relationship like family love.
many times used interchangeable.
Don’t think of them as agape being a higher type of love.
careful not to make too much out of it. However, John records a difference here.
Peter- I don’t just love you because I have to. I love you because I know you and have a relationship with you.
Romans 10:9-10
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Purpose
Purpose
If you love me… do what I say.
Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
Teach Believers
Perfection is not the qualification of teaching others.
Loving Jesus is the qualification.
We are all called to make disciples.
Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Our purpose is to fulfill God’s purpose.
“My sheep”
We tend and feed that which belongs to Jesus as his servants.
Our purpose changes when we give our life to Jesus.
Doesn’t mean our career has to change.
It means the reason we exist changes.
2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
CONCLUSUION
No matter your past it has been paid for by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He died to pay your sin debt and was resurrected to show his power over death.
Romans 3:23

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:8
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 10:9-10
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Romans 10:13
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
