When a victory doesn’t feel like a victory.
Jesus died and rose again with all power in his hand
He said, Into your hands I commend my spirit
We are redeemed
God has purchased our freedom with his life
But now they are hiding behind locked doors.
Jesus finds the disciples together with the doors locked in fear that the Jewish leaders would do to them what they
did to Jesus.
This doesn’t feel like victory
This doesn’t feel like winning
They are afraid
They have been self quarantined from perceived danger.
This is His first appearance to the disciples as a group
Jesus came in while the doors was locked
1. A Gift of Peace
Jesus tells them Peace be with you similar to
John 14:27 NIV
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
2. A Gift of Joy
Jesus tells them to look at His hands and his feet and they are overjoyed that they saw the Lord
3. Honor to represent Christ
John 20:21–23 NIV
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
Jesus breaths on them as God breath life into adam
Genesis 2:7 NIV
7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Receive the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit’s work in people
Holy Spirit has the power to forgive
If you forgive anyone’s sins...
Matthew 16:19 NIV
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
