I’m probably stealing some of Don Tyson’s stored up devotional material here, since he told me about this movie, but I watched a movie last night called “greater” which tells the story of Brandon Burlsworth, who was an all-american football player for Arkansas back in the late 1990s.
But he didn’t start his college career as some top recruit, in fact he walked on at Arkansas and was told there was no way he’d ever play a game.
But he worked hard, became an All American his senior year, and was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round in 1999.
But that’s not all that the movie is about. The movie tells about how Brandon Burlsworth was an incredible man of faith and how he did things the right way.
He didn’t drink, he didn’t party, instead he worked hard, went to Bible studies, he put Christ first. Which made him stand out from the crowd
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Here is my question tonight that I would like to explore, to get your thoughts on and to look at.
Why did Jesus say this?
"How Deep The Father's Love For Us"
How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory
One prominent theory takes a look at
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
13 You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong, why do you idly look at traitors and remain silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he?
and so the theory goes that Jesus, who took on our sins and the sins of the whole world upon himself on the cross, was punished for those sins, and in the process God turned abandoned him there on the cross, if for only a moment, which caused Jesus to cry out “Why have you forsaken me?”
Hide your face
24 Why do you hide your face and count me as your enemy?
None of my bones are broken.
33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,
