Sermon

Primarily a revelation between Jesus Christ and His relationship with the church.
It is only secondarily anything beyond that.
Cleaning up your relationship with Christ will profoundly and positively impact your physical well being…however the reverse is not true. Working on your marriage or cleaning up your marriage does not enhance your relationship with Christ.
We were in Christ - we were taken out - we are being place back in Christ.
This is not all - Matthew 15:13
Because your wife is yourself - when you love her you are loving yourself...
Eve taken from Adam and formed
The church out of Christ and formed into the body of Christ
Christ is not less than God - but God the Father is the head of Christ
Christ is the head of the church - The husband the head of the wife
We are speaking of sphere of activities
-in everything
The wife submits herself to her husband because she is submitting to Christ - not because her husband is like Christ.
This does not make the wife a servant but a Queen. We are not made in view of Christ “slaves” but royalty.
vs25. Love - intulectual love - as Christ loved the church. You have to take time here to take in all of the depths of the incarnation, calvary, the resurrection and so on. You have to travel through all of what was intelectually taken upon Christ in His love for the church. To willingly and purposfully come for the intent of giving himself for the church. Husbands - that is the mindset of love from husband to wife in marriage..but more than that - that is the picture of Christ to you.
note: not one passage of scripture says that man is the head of the house.
It is a one body exercise. I don’t know if i’ve heard a single marriage issue in my years of counseling. I have heard love issues. A lack of intelectual understanding of love, a lack of effort, a lack of self understanding...
vs 26. Sanctified (arist) - not that God is sanctifying but that God has once and for all set you apart for Himself. Yes you are continually learning of that and growing in your experiencing of it - but God has already set you apart -fully unto Himself.
The tense has to indicate that regeneration did the washing. Not that baptism or anything else does the washing. (this doesn’t mean that one cannot do cerimonial baptism - but that has nothing to do with your regeneration)
SO the washing is not baptism with water or ceremony - it is the word - the scripture - the teaching of regeneration.
John 14:4 NASB95PARA
4 And you know the way where I am going.”
John 17:17 NASB95PARA
17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
This is a direct reference to
Ephesians 4:20–22 NASB95PARA
20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,
In order that He himself may have a stand with Him a glorious church.
As He stands - I stand
As He has no spot - I have no spot
As He is holy - I am holy...
The prime purpose of this text is not to improve your marriage, but to improve your understanding of who you are in Christ.
Ephesians 5:25 NASB95PARA
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,
When you love your wife you are loving your own body…for this is how Christ has loved us…we are His body. When Christ loves us - He loves His own body.
Ephesians 5:29 NASB95PARA
29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,
God says this - so I know its true....but listen…Christ doesn’t hate any member of His own body, but nourishes and cherishes every portion of it.
Ephesians 5:30 NASB95PARA
30 because we are members of His body.
make a note - you are nourished and cherished not because of production - but because you are members of His body. I am not teaching against reward, but I am saying the basis of care, nourishment and cherishing is not production but love.
Ephesians 5:31 NASB95PARA
31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
Glued perminatley to wife
have become one
Ephesians 5:32 NASB95PARA
32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.
Great mystery - you could not know unless I told you - but you have been told that this is in fact Christ and the church and now you know because you have been told. You have been taken out of him and then put back as His own body.
What has just been revealed is a revelation of Jesus Christ and the church.
So you can find all sorts of failures in this world if you put it supremely as husband and wife - but this is about and never failingly about Christ loving (present tense) the church (the husband however is constantly reminded to love His wife)
so…though this is about Christ and His church...
Ephesians 5:33 NASB95PARA
33 Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.
