1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; 2 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,
To bring good news to the afflicted. (v.1)
To bind up the brokenhearted - a spiritually broken heart, broken on account of sin, and sometimes, the brokenness of spirit which arises from physical sorrow, mental anxiety, or temporal trouble leads up to the contrition of heart which is most acceptable to God.
To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners. (v.1) - prisoners of sin
26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.
To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God.(v.2)
There is probably an allusion (calling to mind) here to the year of Jubilee, when the trumpet was blown, and liberty was proclaimed throughout all the land (so Leviticus 25:9-10). In like manner the Messiah would come to proclaim universal liberty - liberty to all the world from the degrading servitude of sin. The time of his coming would be a time when Yahweh would be pleased to proclaim through him universal emancipation from this ignoble bondage, and to restore to all the privilege of being the freedmen of the Lord.
Year of Jubilee - The Year of Jubilee, which came every 50th year, was a year full of releasing people from their debts, releasing all slaves, and returning property to who owned it (Leviticus 25:1-13).every 50th year was to be announced as a jubilee year. All real property should automatically revert to its original owner (Leviticus 25:10; compare 25:13), and those who, compelled by poverty, had sold themselves as slaves to their brothers, should regain their liberty (Leviticus 25:10; compare 25:39).
To comfort all who mourn. - com
34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.
to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.
38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
43 But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”
“I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”
10 “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
to seek and to save that which was lost.”
37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
To testify to the truth.
Hearing is more on obeying.
Hearing makes us accountable.
