Introduction

1996 Western Conference finals
Claude Lemieux checked Kris Draper from behind
Broken jaw, shattered cheek and orbital bone
Reconstructive surgery, numerous stitches, jaw wired shut
Avalanche won game, series, and swept the Panthers
1997 before the playoffs
Igor Larionov and Peter Forsberg got into a fight
Darren McCarty turn and started wailing on Lemieux
Patrick Roy clotheslined by Brendan Shanahan
Adam Foote came in for Shanahan
Mike Vernon went after Foote
Then Patrick Roy and Mike Vernon had an epic goalie fight
It was total chaos! Awesome!
Detroit would go on and win 2 Cups in a row
We call that REDEMPTION!
There was a a guy we kept talking about during 3 years...
He told Jesus He wouldn’t die
Jesus called Him Satan
He offered to build tents for Moses, Elijah and Jesus
God told him to listen to Jesus
He stepped out onto the water
He lost faith and started to sink
He cut off the ear of a soldier
Jesus fixed it and told him to live another way
Good ol’ Peter!
Just before Jesus dies he says this:
Matthew 26:33 ESV
33 Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.”
Jr. High Basketball
Wouldn’t stop shooting 3’s
Uh, here we go again...
Peter’s big mistake then comes along: denying Jesus 3 times
This is Peter’s last act before Jesus dies
You caved under pressure like Tekashi 6ix 9ine
Today we’re starting a new series in 1 Peter
Called “Redemption”
How Peter went from mistake maker to disciple maker
Today’s message is called “Snuff the Rooster”
Named from a line in a Pearl Jam song...
Eric Hahn is probably losing his mind right now
He’s the one that corrected my Tom Petty mistake
It’s John Cougar!
This isn’t Pearl Jam, Soundgarden
I’m kidding, it’s Alice in Chains
Think about that as we read this letter
Peter is a different guy after the resurrection
Peter has been one of the strongest leaders for 30 years at this point
Look at everything in contrast to the rooster...
1 Peter 1:3–5 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Peter’s first reaction is to praise
No one knows that man is not the source more than Peter
Spurgeon said this:
As we are by nature, justice condemns us, holiness frowns upon us, power crushes us, truth confirms the threatening of the law, and wrath fulfils it. It is from the mercy of our God that all our hopes begin.
There’s nothing we should be thankful for more than mercy
Then Peter references Jesus’ resurrection
Our hope is alive!
It is something that cannot die!
Our hope lies in things that are not of this world
It’s not about money or health or power...
It’s about living in eternity with God!
I want to say here… heaven is not our hope
Our hope is IN HEAVEN
VP George Bush rep’d US at Leonid Brezhnev’s funeral
Widow stood silently in protest by coffin
Before closed, she made bold statement - sign of cross
This man - power of atheism and secularism
Wife hoped he was wrong
She hoped there was another life, and Jesus would have mercy
Eternity is something we will all face - you will face eternity
Do you have hope, or are you hopeless?
1 Peter 1:6–7 ESV
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
This hope burns within during trials
It is this hope that powers us through misery
We’re not Superman - bouncing bullets
Trials do affect us! That’s unavoidable
But our faith can get us through them
I spoke with Trisha Tanner a few months ago
She is fighting a rare form of cancer
She said, “ I never thought I’d be able to handle cancer. But once I was in it, I found out I could do it because I had to.”
That is our faith
We are tested not because God doesn’t know about our faith...
It’s because we often don’t realize how much faith we have
Blindfold Strat test
Mixed up a $100 Squire and $2,000 Fender Custom Shop
We often try to look faithful
Show up to church with family in tow, collared shirt, amen...
You’re dying inside!
Your faith isn’t about looks — it’s about what it can do!
It’s incredibly hard, but we should be thankful we get to see our faith in motion
As Billy Sunday said, “If you have no joy, there’s a leak in your Christianity!”
It’s valuable - more than gold!
Gold is extremely durable
But even it will perish
Your faith in Christ will NEVER perish
It is eternal
Just like gold is refined
Explain dross
Your faith must be refined
Then it is purified and more valuable because it is pure
It’s not polluted by the lies and motives of the world
1 Peter 1:8–9 ESV
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Remember Peter is writing to those who never saw Jesus
Peter is saying love for Jesus is real, even if you never saw Him
Coming from a guy who spent years with Jesus!
Remember what Jesus said to Thomas
John 20:29 ESV
29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
You can’t live your whole life based on certainties
Leaving the mill, I had no promises
Coworkers called me STUPID
My dad yelled at us for not having insurance
All I knew what i was following God’s direction
It wasn’t only about evidence, it was about faith
Evidence is important (We’ll do an apologetics lesson)
But no matter how much evidence, it has to be the Spirit moving
When He does move, and you react, what is the outcome?
Salvation of your soul!
Is there anything better than that?
1 Peter 1:10–12 ESV
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
Peter wants to stress this is not some new idea
All of the Old Testament points to Jesus and His promise
10 prophecies - odds are 1 in 16,425 to the 47th
Pretty slim odds...
Hundreds of prophets waited for God’s grace to be delivered
They all wrote, waiting to know
I’m sure Samuel would have loved to read Matthew!
I’m sure Malachi would have died to read Luke!
And now we know what God’s grace looks like
Not only those men, but even the angels want to know!
The word “LONG” is epi-poth-eh-oh
It’s a strong craving or desire
They really want to see God working in His church! You and me!
Angels are watching our lives with interest!
It’s like a Spiritual Truman Show!
They want to see everything we do, because we are living examples of God’s grace
What a privilege - to represent God in such a way
Live your life as if you’re on display… because you are!
You have an audience!
Your spouse sees how you live in private
Your kids see if you lead them in prayer
Your boss sees if you work as unto the Lord
The person on the highway sees if you’re cutting people off...
Make sure how you act is worthy of the God that gives you life

Prayer

Blessings
I hope you have a great morning
And if I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight
