Mission and Vision
Apostle’s Creed
We are continuing our sermon series on the Apostles creed
We are diving into what bonds us together as a body of Christ
These truths that the church fathers agreed upon were all stated to combat some lie that came agaisnt the church
The believers were trying to establish what it meant at a base level to be a Christian
In these times we as believers need to get back to what it is that we believe… as Christians
Not speaking politics or opinions but as citizens of heaven living as elect exiles here on earth… what is it that we truly rest upon and what governs our life
Last week we skipped a clause in the creed to come to the resurrection. But today we’re going to dive into what we believe about Jesus going into the dead and about his resurrection and why it matters
He descended to the dead
and then He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father
DESCENDED
Because Jesus had to not only physically die, but his spirit had to enter into the realm of the dead.
Some translations say he descended to hell others say he descended to the dead
I like either the dead or hades
Jesus didn’t go to Hell as we think of it as the lake of fire
Jesus went to a place that the OT called Sheol and the NT called hades
Hades/sheol… pre Crucifixion was described as 2 different spaces.
We see this when jesus tells us about the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16
The first is where the righteous went… Like Lazarus. Also called the bosom of Abraham
a place of rest for the righteous while they awaited their hope of diliverence
All the heroes of the faith … who we see in Hebrews 11 , they were all waiting for Jesus in this land of Abrahams bosom. This resting place for the dead
The second is not the lake of fire. It’s the place of darkness and weeping and gnashing of teeth.
This is where the rich man went
It was hot, uncomfortable
Jesus said in other places that it is the outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth
What did Jesus do there?
The book of Ephesians tells us that when Jesus descended to the dead it was to retrieve the captives
He ripped the gates off of hades (the good place) and lead the host of captives with him to heaven
Then when He ascended he took Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel… and all the men and women of the faith who died before Christ and he lead them into the presence of God in heaven
Ascended
1 Peter 3:22
1 Peter 3:22 ESV
who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
Every enemy, every THING is under his control
Seated
Rest
Work is done
Sits in supremacy
Royalty sits in the presence of others
Right hand
Hand of power
The might of God
The authority of God the father
Hebrews 6:19-20
Hebrews 6:19–20 ESV
We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Steadfast
Built in place. Immovable
In times when facts change almost on a daily basis
It is important to come back to the center of who we are as Christians
To fully rest on the truth that Jesus Christ went down into death
Came back with the keys
Ascended above every possible power and principality
and sat down at the right hand of the father
he is done
The fact that he is seated with all authority means that our faith, our hope, andour life is seated in the heavnely places with Jesus
While we are here dealing with temporary and transitional truths
Let us never forget that Jesus has accomplished what is impossible for you and me
And he is fixed… Steadfast
