1 Peter was written to the churches in Asia Minor (Modern Day Turkey)
Paul had written letters to these churches, of which we still have several: Galatians, Ephesians and Colossians.
John also addressed some of the same churches in the book of Revelation
Nero’s persecution of Christians in A.D. 64-67 was very severe in and around Rome, but not in the rest of the Roman Empire.
It was a trying time. The church as a whole was about 35yrs Old.
It had suffered persecution in various places at the hands of local authorities.
The Letter was born in the atmosphere of suffering and exhorted Christians not to think it strange that they had to suffer, reminding them that Christ did His work by suffering.
1 Peter Chapter 1 gives believers a picture of hope
1 Peter 1:18–19 ESV
knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
“Knowing the you were ransomed”
Ransomed: Liberated / Delivered / Rescued
Ransom: A sum of money or other payment demanded or paid for the release of a prisoner!
God demanded a payment must be made! The payment was Death! Eternal separation
Genesis 2:17 ESV
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Death was the payment (End result) and Sin was my master
On the Cross - Jesus becomes Sin and pays my ransom!
not by silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ. “Like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.”
1 Peter 1:20–21 ESV
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
John 1:1 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
“Through him (Jesus) are believers in God”
So that your faith and hope are in God!
A snapshot of Faith -
1 Peter 1:8–9 ESV
Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
You believe and Rejoice with Joy
Joy that is inexpressible: Unspeakable, indescribable and too great for words.
Joy that is filled with glory: Praise and honor
“obtaining the outcome of your faith” Understanding the reward of your faith is salvation of your souls.
Ephesians 2:8 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
1 peter chapter 1 ends with
1 Peter 1:24–25 ESV
for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
Grow Up!
1 Peter 2:1 ESV
So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.
“So” - Because of what Christ has done and understanding the foundation of our faith
Put away: Strip Away / Get rid of
All Malice: Hateful feeling
All deceit: Stop trying to fool people
Hypocrisy: the quality of not expressing genuine feelings. Insincerity
Envy: Jealousies
All Slander: Backstabbing
1 Peter 2:2–3 ESV
Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
1 Peter 2:4–5 ESV
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Romans 12:1 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
1 Peter 2:6–8 ESV
For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
OT Flashback
Exodus 19:5–6 ESV
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”
1 Peter 2:9–10 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
