THE POWER OF THE SOWER
Luke 8:1–16

Jesus often spoke in parables. His teaching was always simple, short, and to the point. Don’t we wish more Pastors were like that? Though it was simple, yet it was a profound, sometimes life changing story. His teachings have stood the test of time. They have continued down through the years, changing the lives of men and women, as well as changing communities and nations.

JESUS WAS ALWAYS LOOKING TO SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE.

Jesus was a Preacher, Jesus goes through the area, preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve disciples are with Him. Luke tells us in 8:1-3:

“1 Soon afterward Jesus began a tour of the nearby towns and villages, preaching and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom of God. He took his twelve disciples with him, 2 along with some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons; 3 Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples.”

THE PARABLE BEGINS, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION CHURCH—vv. 4–8

Jesus speaks through symbols or parables. Let’s set up the story, why is Jesus even telling the people this story? It’s obvious that Jesus has noticed a few things about the people, are they telling others about Jesus? Are they lazy? Are they the kinds of people who are “all in” in the beginning of something then the “joy” fizzles our?

A sower went out to sow his seed. Notice the types of soil Jesus uses in his story:

Luke 8:4–6 “4 One day Jesus told a story in the form of a parable to a large crowd that had gathered from many towns to hear him: 5 “A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it across his field, some seed fell on a footpath, where it was stepped on, and the birds ate it. 6 Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture.”

Trodden down, people and animals walked on it and crushed it, birds came and ate it.

Rocky soil, The Seed Sprouted quickly and quickly died, there were no roots for nourishment.

Luke 8:7–8 “7 Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants. 8 Still other seed fell on fertile soil. This seed grew and produced a crop that was 30, 60, and a hundred times as much as had been planted!” When he had said this, he called out, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

Right now, do you feel like you are “Among the thorns?” Ever feel like you have been planted in a briar patch of thorns? Every which way you turn, you get stuck or hurt. Thorns choke out the new growth.

We all love Good ground don’t we? We love linking our toes into rich fertile things in life? We love to be healthy, we love to be the best, we love to do better than all others-----Don’t we?

NOW, JESUS IS REALLY PAINTING A PICTURE HERE. CAN YOU SEE IT?

So, why is Jesus using this parable? Because like I do today, Jesus is using real life stories, real life situations to make the truth easy for all of us to understand. NOW JESUS WILL EXPLAIN HIS STORY, HIS PARABLE TO THE DISCIPLES BECAUSE HE WANTS US ALL TO UNDERSTAND HIS WORDS:

Luke 8:9–10 “9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: ‘When they look, they won’t really see. When they hear, they won’t understand.”

Luke 8:11–12 11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is God’s word. 12 The seeds that fell on the footpath represent those who hear the message, only to have the devil come and take it away from their hearts and prevent them from believing and being saved.

OK, NOW WE ARE SEEING THAT The seed is God’s Word. So when we go to church or talk to a friend or watch FB Live, we hear God’s word but then what happens to us? What do we do with God’s word? Are we allowing Satan to take it from us?

Luke 8:13–14 “13 The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation. 14 The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life. And so they never grow into maturity.”

So now let’s see what happens if we do what we are led to do with the teachings that we receive from God???????

Luke 8:15–16 (NLT)

15 And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest. 16 “No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house.
