Romans 8:12–13 NKJV
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Therefore...
Romans 8:5–11 NKJV
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Therefore… We are not debtors to the flesh to live according the flesh. That is I have no obligation to live according to the flesh.

We Are Debtors

Why say “we are debtor - not to the flesh” why not say “we are not debtors to the flesh”?
Because we are, in fact, debtors. The word means “One held by some obligation or bound by some duty”. But Paul begins with the negative. we are debtors indeed but not to the flesh.
Specifically he says “to live according to the flesh”
Romans 8:12 NKJV
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
this links back to verse 5
Romans 8:5 NKJV
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh. That is they have given themselves over to the desires of the flesh.
But you, he says, are not obligated to give in to the flesh and yield to its demands. Why? Well this argument follows from what Paul said in
Romans 6:20–22 NKJV
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
“For the end of those things is death”
or
“you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
heres the contrast that we also find in
Romans 8:13 NKJV
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
This is life or death. Far more than the life or death of the body this is life or death of the soul and spirit. Eternal death or eternal life. To live according to the flesh means that you will die. Corrona virus is nothing. The the greatest pandemic the world will ever know it the pandemic of Sin. It has 100% saturation and the fatality rate for those who do not receive the cure is 100%

Sin Kills

If you live according to the flesh you will die. This is what Paul said in rom 6:21 and this is what he said in
Romans 8:5–6 NKJV
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Death is verdict of the fleshly minded. That is those who’s hearts are set on fleshly things, money, greed, worldly power, sexual immorality, covetousness. Their hearts are fixed on the fulfilment of every fleshly desire through all manner of evil. This is the heart of those who live after the flesh and it will bring them to eternal death and destruction.
What is the cure? How is a person to avoid this end?
He or she must live according to the Spirit? They must have new life. Because the only way to have a spiritual mind is to first live in the spirit. You must be born again. Because Paul says those who live according to the Spirit mind the things of the Spirit.
That means the heart is changed. God said in
Ezekiel 36:26–27 NKJV
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
This is the cure and the cure when accepted is 100% successful.
When God puts His Spirit in you and changes your heart from carnal to spiritual then “to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
If we have been born of the spirit then by the Spirit we must ...

Kill Sin

in our bodies
Romans 8:13 NKJV
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
This is a very neglected and yet very important Biblical truth. The mortification of sin in our bodies. We began with Paul saying that we are debtors or we are obligated. And he first mentioned the negative. But here we have the positive. that is, we are not obligated to the flesh to live after the flesh but we are obligated to the Spirit. As in chapter 6 we are no longer slaves to sin but we are slaves to God. and our obligation to God and to the Spirit is to kill the deeds of the flesh.
We so easily become apathetic in this duty but assured it is our duty. We are in warfare against sin and we must slay it in our bodies.
Jesus said...
Matthew 5:29–30 NKJV
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
This is violent warfare on sin. So how do we engage in battle?
Romans 8:13 NKJV
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
“By the Spirit” This is the essential key to this verse. You cannot put to death the deed of the body by the flesh. The flesh is fleshly, and any attempt to kill the deeds of the body (sin) by the flesh only creates new and more sinister sin. If the flesh can’t be fulfilled through one sin it will find another. And it loves the religious sins of pride and self-righteousness most of all.
The Spirit must put sin to death. How does the Spirit put sin to death in me?
Ephesians 6:14–17 NKJV
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
The weapon of the Spirit is the Word of God. So we hear God’s Word which says.
Hebrews 13:5–6 NKJV
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
Covetousness is a sin in my body. By the Spirit I hear the Word of God say “I will never leave you nor forsake you” this truth wraps around me like a belt and I take up the shield of faith and boldly say “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” and in this I strike a blow to covetousness in my body.
So whether it is covetousness, or pride or anger or lust. No mater what sin it is, take up the sword of the Spirit and by faith kill sin in you body For we have no obligation to our flesh to live after the flesh but we are indebted to the Spirit to by the Spirit put to death the deeds of the flesh.
