God Is Almighty

Genesis 17:1–8 ESV
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, 2 that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” 3 Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, 4 “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. 8 And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”

Character of God

Genesis 17:1 ESV
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless,
God’s Declaration is what sets the tone for all that follows
Multiply you (v.2)
Father of multitude of nations (v.4)
Give you land of his sojournings/travels (v.8)
Only an Almighty God would be able to “deliver the goods”
Exodus 6:3 ESV
3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them.
Moses has run from trouble in Egypt
God is about to “set the nation free”
Connection to the same God
Protection and Deliverance
Psalm 62:5–7 ESV
5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. 7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
David waits, and ultimately trust in the Lord
Contrast is verses 9-10
Source of well being? Wealth and Power or God
Psalm 62:11 NKJV
11 God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God.
God is the one to whom all Power belongs (inherently)
David (and you) can have confidence because of his all powerful God

Power Described As

Everlasting

Isaiah 26:4 NKJV
4 Trust in the Lord forever, For in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength.
ESV brings out the metaphor of “Rock of Ages” (God is an everlasting rock)
The mountains have stood through the ages, so does God
Romans 1:20 ESV
20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Paul describes power as eternal
Silly illustration of the Energizer bunny. God is truly the only eternal source of power

Sovereign

Deuteronomy 32:39 ESV
39 “ ‘See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.
Daniel 4:35 ESV
35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?”
In those two verses you find that God’s power is not controlled by anyone but God
God’s power is available to His children, but it is not our to command
It is ours to find ourselves protected and held by
1 Peter 1:3–5 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Debate happens about what God’s power is guarding (Inheritance or Believer)
It is God’s power that secures

Incomparable

Psalm 89:8 ESV
8 O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you?
There is nothing in heaven or among men who can compare
Remember - Satan is created (and hence leashed) foe

Believers Should Be

Strengthened

Ephesians 6:10 ESV
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
We can be strengthened in the Lord
Taking up the whole armor of God
Colossians 1:11–12 ESV
11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
Paul is praying for the church (believers)
Strength
to endure
with joy
giving thanks
I would add the qualification is based upon His power as well

Upheld

Isaiah 41:10 ESV
10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
When surrounded by our enemies. When faced with uncertainty. When knowing that we have little strength left
Isaiah 40:28–31 ESV
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Post exile period
But just notice all the ways God upholds His people
He does not tire
He energizes and strengthens

Delivered

Daniel 3:17 ESV
17 If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.
Hebrew children threatened to worship false god
God has power to deliver
and He did!

Conclusion

Our Faith Rest In

1 Corinthians 2:1–5 ESV
1 And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, 4 and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
Paul wanted faith not resting in lofty speech, plausible words of wisdom
Paul anchored faith in power of Holy Spirit, Power of God
