Sanctification Requires Cleansing
19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.
Those who have obeyed the gospel have been sanctified (separated) from the world (Acts 2:47; Col. 1:13).
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
Paul, in 2 Tim. 2:20, likens the church to a Great House.
20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor.
Just as in a Great House, there are vessels for honor and for dishonor; in the church there are some who are honoring their sanctification and some who are dishonoring their sanctification.
Jesus taught the same principle in the parable of the dragnet (Matt. 13:47-50).
47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, 48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50 and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”
The vessel of honor is the one who has been cleansed, and kept clean, through
continual obedience to the gospel (Col. 1:23).
23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.
“…depart from iniquity” (2 Tim. 2:19) - verb, aorist, active, imperative.

“…cleanses himself” (2 Tim. 2:21) - verb, aorist, active, subjunctive.
21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.

As vessels of honor, we are committed to being useful for the Master!
Useful as committed servants of the Cross (Matt. 20:28; Jn. 13:12-17).
28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Useful through our commitment to flee from the wrong things and pursue the right things (2 Tim. 2:22-26).
22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. 24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

“…prepared for every good work” (cf. Titus 2:14; 2 Tim. 3:17).
14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
When we obey the gospel we become living stones in the temple of God! (1 Pet. 2:5).
5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
We become part of the construction of God’s House! (Eph. 2:19-22; Acts 2:42).
19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
