Why do people choose darkness rather than Light? John 3:19-20

And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

People choose darkness because they love acting on the impulses of fleshly lust and desire that satisfy for a moment but in the end rot and weaken the structural integrity of the soul.
Why do people forget the God who made them? Deuteronomy 8:11-20

Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, 12 lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; 13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; 14 when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; 15 who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water; who brought water for you out of the flinty rock; 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end—17 then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’

18 “And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. 20 As the nations which the LORD destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.

People forget God because great blessings can procure a complacent busyness that often distracts one from continuously acknowledging where the prosperity comes from and therefore can lead deeper and deeper into self-absorption and ultimately, sin.
People forget God because blessings withheld can procure a bitter and defiant heart that seeks to find them apart from God elsewhere from anyone or anything that will produce the illusion of success (this can be Satans greatest breach-point!).
There has to be a continuous fear and acknowledgment of God that transcends our earthly conditions whether good or bad… (one hand righteous and the other wicked) Ecclesiastes 7:16-18

Do not be overly righteous,

Nor be overly wise:

Why should you destroy yourself?

17 Do not be overly wicked,

Nor be foolish:

Why should you die before your time?

18 It is good that you grasp this,

And also not remove your hand from the other;

For he who fears God will escape them all.

David was man after God’s own heart not because he was perfect but because he was faithful and trusting when all circumstances in his life pointed in the opposite direction of those two things.
They who are lost may see and understand there is something more beyond the physical realm but lose interest in the fundamental truth about how everything was made by God in the beginning! Romans 1:20-23

20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

So we come to our text where we see a clear example of a man who began strong in faith falls head first onto the salacious and spiritually immoral grounds of worldly lust and idol worship, becoming a man whose story concludes with being a King who did evil in the sight of the Lord…
1 Kings 11:1–8

But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites—2 from the nations of whom the LORD had said to the children of Israel, “You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. 3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 4 For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the LORD his God, as was the heart of his father David. 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and did not fully follow the LORD, as did his father David. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon. 8 And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.

1. The key to remembering and keeping God’s Word is by being resolved to always stand up for the Truth against the lies.
Solomon did not do this his entire life. He allowed his heart to be changed over time!
His knowledge about God and what was right didn’t change - his devotion to Godly propriety changed and with it his resolve to trust in the Lord with all his heart.
One of the greatest mysteries in the bible is how this man who wrote three books of Gods Holy Word could end up doing everything contrary to what he had written; and the words be said of him, And Solomon did evil in the sight of God.
2. The condemnation is that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. John 3:19
In this passage Christ is giving us the answer to why those who are in darkness are condemned.
All who are of the world love the self-satisfaction of being able to wear the deception of darkness like a masquerade garment at a lifeless party for fools who do not understand they are dancing with mirth in a decorated crematorium at the verge of being lit! -Seth Lewis
Here in John 3:19-20 the idea of self-centeredness is expanded by the clear indication that what one does reflects who one is. Matthew 12:34-35

Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

What is clear throughout history is that mankind has chosen darkness by turning a blind eye to what is right for the sake of fulfilling a powerful urge to do what is wrong; regardless of knowing deep down inside that it is displeasing to God.
It has been said, that what you surround yourself with will consume you; and ultimately that will either corrupt you or make you better.
3. Let’s go back and ponder what Solomon surrounded himself with… and keep in mind that this is the man who penned Proverbs 2:10-22!

When wisdom enters your heart,

And knowledge is pleasant to your soul,

11 Discretion will preserve you;

Understanding will keep you,

12 To deliver you from the way of evil,

From the man who speaks perverse things,

13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness

To walk in the ways of darkness;

14 Who rejoice in doing evil,

And delight in the perversity of the wicked;

15 Whose ways are crooked,

And who are devious in their paths;

16 To deliver you from the immoral woman,

From the seductress who flatters with her words,

17 Who forsakes the companion of her youth,

And forgets the covenant of her God.

18 For her house leads down to death,

And her paths to the dead;

19 None who go to her return,

Nor do they regain the paths of life—

20 So you may walk in the way of goodness,

And keep to the paths of righteousness.

21 For the upright will dwell in the land,

And the blameless will remain in it;

22 But the wicked will be cut off from the earth,

And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.

Ashteroth - Baal and Ashtaroth were the principal god and goddess, respectively, of the Canaanite nations (Baalim and Ashtaroth were the plural forms of these names, referring to the many shrines and images in their honor). Baal was essentially associated with the sun and storms, Ashtaroth with sex and fertility.
Molech - Jeremiah 32:34–35 - But they set their abominations in the house which is called by My name, to defile it. And they built the high places of Baal which are in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I did not command them, nor did it come into My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.’
The disobedience of mankind is not rooted only in the desires to have wealth, power, or sex, but is rooted in being able to influence the principalities and powers in the heavenly places with acceptable offerings of blood and wickedness that they hope will end their journey to complete enlightenment.
Unfortunately, it is the complete opposite! Darkness is the place where sin festers and corrupts the hearts of men against God’s good Light. God will not tolerated it!
1 Corinthians 10:20–22 - Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
It is the knowledge of God that turns us away from evil; it is the knowledge of the world that corrupts our behavior and leads us to sin – Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God (1 Corinthians 15:33–34).
Those who are in the darkness of this world always consume its deceitful propaganda of false life, liberty, and happiness but find no nourishment from the lies they try to digest. 2 Peter 2:18-22
