HOOK

Yesterday we ended chapter with the story of Jesus healing an official’s son— from that we learned that:
There’s power of healing in the words of Jesus
Jesus is neither early nor late
I promise to show you yesterday what a synagogue looks like [SHOW ARTIST PERSPECTIVE OF A SYNAGOGUE]
Today as we begin with chapter 5, we will see another episode of Jesus’ healing power
Open your Bible to chapter 5 of the gospel of John
We’ll just read 6 verses today and I am going to read from 3 different translations— pay careful attention as we read these different translations— tell me later what you notice

BOOK

John 5:1–6 NIV
1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 4 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
John 5:1–6 KJV 1900
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. 5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

DO YOU WANT TO GET WELL?
We are about to see another miracle by Jesus— but we will save that part of the story for tomorrow.
WHAT HAPPENED TO VERSE 4?
I’d like to use the time to discuss why there is a missing verse in the NIV translation of the Bible?
KJV has verse 4 while NIV doesn’t— hmmmm why?
WATCH THIS SHORT VIDEO - From Biblica— The International Bible Society
Committee in Bible Translations (CBT), the team responsible for the NIV Bible— is composed of world-class and leaders in their respective fields
Their goal is to accurately the Word of God in a way that enables readers and listeners to hear the Bible as it was originally written— and understand it as it was originally intended
While comparing the NIV and KJV— it would seem that there are some verses missing in the NIV— actually, that is not the case
In 1611, the translators of the KJV used best resources to them at that time— for their day, the KJV is a monumental achievement!
The older the manuscripts the more reliable
Therefore, translations such as the NIV actually reflect better Bible scholarship than was available in 1611 when the KJV was published
The verses or phrases that appeared in the KJV, but have been “omitted” in most trusted translations today, are not found in the oldest and most reliable manuscripts
Modern translators include or reference them in footnotes. These footnotes are intended to help the reader understand that certain perceived differences in the text are due to improved biblical scholarship.
It is important and comforting to note that no doctrines of the Christian faith are affected by differences between the KJV and translations such as the NIV that follow more reliable sources
There are more verses that are omitted in the newer translations of the Bible, I can give you a list— meanwhile let me give you another one in Matthew 6:13
