John 1:19-34
John 1:19–34 KJV 1900
And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

Last time we looked at the importance of us being a witness for Christ. We looked at the importance of us not seeking our own glory but the glory of God.
Today we are going to look at something equally as important in light of who Christ is. We will again look at w major thoughts through this passage of scripture. The first thought being where our authority comes from, the second being who Christ is according to the Scripture.

Johns Questioning

There were a group of people sent to John inquiring who he was
They related him to key figures prophisied in end times by different profits.
Next Slide
Was John the Messiah, Christ?
He answered “I am not the Christ”
Was he the prophet Isaiah?
He is not Isaiah
Was he the other prophet?
His answer was simply no
John simply answers who he is by reminding the the pharisees of an old testament passage seen in Isaiah.

Isaiah 40:3
Isaiah 40:3 KJV 1900
The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
The crowed that was sent to question John on who he was wanted him to admit he was not talked about in the old testament they were digging to find out where or why John had the authority to baptise people. Isaiah talked about johns important role of pointing people to Christ to the Messiah.
This was not good enough for the pharisees however they wanted to know what authority John claimed, who gave him the right to baptise people if he was not the Christ, Isaiah or the prophet.
John gives them an answer. But not before the why.

Johns Authority

John was authorized to baptise by God but someone much greater was present.
John later proves his authority came from God when talking in deeper on Christ.

Johns Declaration

John Declares Christ is the Lamb of God.
He explains Christ will take away the sins of the entire world.
This includes past, present and future!
Praise God for the price he was willing to pay for our sinful nature. If you have never heard of Christs saving work our your need for it i would encourage you to go to our discipleship page and watch the videos that cover salvation. Christ was the Lamb of God that we could have the ability to be reconciled with God. What a humbling and encouraging truth.

Christ was revealed by God to John and it was revealed that Christ was the Son of God.
This shows us a few different aspects of Christ that should encourage us. It should also show us the importance of sharing Christ with everyone we meet.

Christs relationship to the World

Next Slide
Christ was the lamb of God to take away the sin of the whole world.
this is personal to us because all of us are sinners.
This is important to us because we have no way to pay for our own sin outside of Christ.
Christ (The Word) created the world and died to save the world.

Christs relationship to God the Father

Next Slide
Christ being the son of God shows what God was willing to give on our behalf.
Christ as the son of God showed us who God was personally.
Christ as the Son of God shows both his deity and humanity.
Knowing Christs relationship to us and to God we should be driven to follow him in everything we do. We have no way of accomplishing this without being in his word daily. I would encourage you to have a time in Gods word to learn about him and from him. I would encourage you to invite those you know to listen to these lessons and would encourage you to subscribe to know when we release new lessons.
