John 5:1–5 “1 Afterward Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish holy days. 2 Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, was the pool of Bethesda, with five covered porches. 3 Crowds of sick people—blind, lame, or paralyzed—lay on the porches. 5 One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years.”

The place of John’s story was the Pool of Bethesda. This pool was used for both swimming and bathing. The word Bethesda means “house of compassion.”

The problem, verse 3 starts our with the phrase, “CROWDS OF SICK PEOPLE” Does this remind any of us of our lives today? —v. 3. All types of sick people came to this pool. Do we have “all types” of sickness in our world today? Physical, mental, addiction, spiritual.....

The power of the Holy Spirit —v. 4. Many believed that an angel came down from heaven once a year and stirred the water. The first one into the water was healed. Do we put our faith in “rituals”, superstitions or Jesus?

Who is this story about? —v. 5. A sick man was at the pool. He had been sick for 38 years. He was crippled and could not get into the pool.

THE POWER OF JESUS John 5:6–9 “6 When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?” 7 “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.” 8 Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” 9 Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath,”

The Loving concern of Jesus—v. 6. Jesus asked the lame man a very simple question, “Would you like to get well?” Jesus showed an interest in and concern for this man. He suffered for the healing of all men—Isaiah 53:5 tells us: 5 But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.

Do we come up with excuses like the lame man? What is our complaint today? Verse 7 says again: 7 “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.” This man had no one to put him into the pool when the water was stirred.

Jesus said to the man, John 5:8 “8 Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” This really meant, “Roll up your bed clothes and go on your way.” This man was depending on “getting into the water” to be healed. Christ healed him, “made him whole.” Some feel that keeping certain rules and laws will make them whole!

The healing was complete, Jesus didn’t heal a little at a time. —v. 9. John 5:9 “9 Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath, a day of Jewish Rules and Regulations.

WHAT WERE SOME PROBLEMS JESUS FACED?10–18
WHAT WERE SOME PROBLEMS JESUS FACED?10–18
The criticism—v. 10. Jesus healed this man on the Sabbath. The keepers of the Sabbath were not happy about this. John 5:10 “10 so the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, “You can’t work on the Sabbath! The law doesn’t allow you to carry that sleeping mat!”....... They were critical of Jesus. Those who were so strict about keeping the Sabbath were the ones who killed Jesus.

The confusion of the lame man. The man who was healed didn’t know it was Jesus, who healed him. John 5:11–13 “11 But he replied, “The man who healed me told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” 12 “Who said such a thing as that?” they demanded. 13 The man didn’t know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd.”

Do we ever find ourselves giving credit to someone else for God’s miracles? Ex. Whew. Great Doctors, Whew, that car swerved just at the right time. Whew, thanks for your advice_________.

Then Jesus command the man that was lame! Jesus found this man in the temple. Notice His words in verse 14: “But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, “Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.”

Do we receive God’s healing, miracles, grace, stop sinning for awhile then......go right back to the lifestyle we were living? Sound familiar?

The man’s confession and witness for what Jesus had done. John 5:15–16 “15 Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules.”....... The man was not ashamed. He told others about Christ. He was a witness for the Lord.

The contempt from the Jewish people. These people sought to kill Christ because He healed on the Sabbath. John 5:17–18 “17 But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.” 18 So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath law, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.
