SERMON NOTES Shannon Huetter, Lead Pastor CHRIST CAME TO FULFILL THE LAW Matthew 5:17-20 May 3, 2020 BIG IDEA:​ ​The demands of the l​ aw​ show us our need for a S ​ avior​. THE KINGDOM CODE Is still in ​place​ (​ vv. 17-18) Is to be ​practiced​ and ​taught​. ​(v. 19) Requires ​perfection​. (​ v. 20) THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW Curb​ - the Law helps to control violent outbursts of sin and keeps order in the world. Mirror​ - the Law accuses us and shows us our sin. Guide​ - the Law teaches us what we should and should not do to live a God-pleasing life. THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW Jesus​ fulfilled the law, because we are unable to. (​ Romans 10:4) By Jesus’ fulfillment of the law, he obtained our e ​ ternal​ ​salvation​. ​(Hebrews 10:11-14) TWO DITCHES TO AVOID Legalism​ - A belief that one can earn or merit God’s approval by performing the requirements of the law. Licentiousness​ ​-A belief that one has ultimate freedom and does not need to follow the law and can live in ​excessive indulgence in pursuit of sensual pleasures.
