There’s no point in worrying
There’s no point in worrying
Hey everyone and welcome back to another weekly devotion for students and families. I hope you’re doing well, we definitely miss you around here! Last week we talked about how uncertain this time is and how no matter what changes here in our lives on earth, God still reigns supreme! This week I want to talk about worry. There is a lot of worry and anxiety in the people’s lives right now, that much is evident. But why do we worry? What good does it do for us? Nothing really is the answer.
See, there was no way I could share on a topic like worry and anxiety without reading from Matthew 6.
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
I’m not sure about you but I know that I need to reread that a lot to be reminded that worrying gets me nowhere. It doesn’t do any good. It never has. In fact, I love this quote from Corrie Ten Boom, a Christian watchmaker who helped shelter families in her home during World War 2. She says,
“Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its troubles; it empties today of its strength.”
So, yes life is crazy and unpredictable right now. But worrying about it won’t change that. Don’t panic, don’t fear, don’t worry. Instead, place your trust in God. Trust Jesus, the one who died for you on the Cross. That we will make it through this, or more specifically that He will deliver us through this pandemic time. So instead of spending our time worrying about tomorrow, instead let’s trust Jesus today. Trust that He has overcome the world and that He has called us into that peace.
