Hymns on the Quay – 10th August, 2008

·      What about Jesus?

o  Olympic heroes will be made over the next fortnight

o  Difficult to be a hero for any length of time...

§  1/3 of the world is Christian, 20% think Jesus is a great prophet

§  His teachings underlie much of the world’s legal and political systems and morality

§  in language; prodigal Son, turning other cheek, not casting stones, good Samaritan, scapegoat

“I am an historian, I am not a believer, but I must confess as a historian that this penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very centre of history. Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history.” H.G. Wells

o  a hero beyond other heroes

§  one who knows us perfectly, one that we can get to know!

7 – Blessed Assurance

·      What did Jesus say? “The time has come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!”

o  the problem of sin

§  modern sins...!

·      booking a table and not showing up

·      taking coat hangers

·      sponsoring and not paying

·      leaving tray at McDs

·      11 items at 10 or less

·      bottom layer of chocs

·      phoning Australia from work

§  broken relationship with the God who made us

o  restored relationship – made new and clean

§  sins are like scarlet, white as snow (Isaiah 1:18)

·      But I’m a good person...

o  yes, by our standards...

o  all have sinned...

§  the peril that we have put ourselves in by our choices

o  we confuse God’s anger with human anger...

§  disobedience leads to the destruction of His creation

o  goodness can change the world, but it can’t change the past

§  two wrongs... three rights...!

o  only Jesus can help

·      Reason together... (1:18)

o  some strange kind of reason!

o  Jesus came to rub it out, not rub it in...

·      How does He do it?

o  through the cross

§  became sin for us

§  rift between Father and Son

§  judge who pays the fine

·      Jesus the lighthouse (yesterday, today and forever)

o  being a Christian is too restrictive

§  too many dos and even more don’ts

·      we like lighthouses to be fixed and permanent

§  OT laws for the benefit of the people

·      deep insecurities

·      something fixed and permanent to save us

·      Why does Jesus save us then?

o  poor and wretched...

§  the love of God; the love of Jesus

o  Carl Lewis put back into first place

o  putting God back to first place in our lives

§  our Creator

§  the One who loves us perfectly

§  the One who saves us from ourselves

o  the pearl of great price
