Devo

Good morning everyone,
It’s Germ here from the Youth 180 team. Back with you for this mornings Devo in Psalms. I hope your week has been great so far. Was awesome hanging out with you guys during youth on Tuesday and I hope more of you will come and join us next Tuesday. If you don’t have the link for zoom please let us know. So this morning we’re going to continue our rhythm of reading the Psalm talking about it then we will end by praying together.
So let’s look at the passage. Turn with me to Psalm 54 and we’re going to read verses 1 to 7. Starting in verse 1 it says, “1 Save me, O God, by your name; vindicate me by your might. 2 Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth. 3 Arrogant foes are attacking me; ruthless people are trying to kill me— people without regard for God. 4 Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. 5 Let evil recoil on those who slander me; in your faithfulness destroy them. 6 I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you; I will praiser your name, Lord, for it is good. 7 You have delivered met from all my troubles, and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.
Well, the Psalm we are in today that is pretty cool I think. This Psalm was written by David. David as we’ve talked about lived a pretty crazy life. He was a guy who made some pretty poor choices at times. But we also know of him is that he was someone who pursued God. The Psalm that we’re looking at this morning we find David in a place where he was hiding. You see he found himself in a position where he was being feverishly pursued by ungodly or worldly men we wanted to end his life.
And so we see in the words of this short Psalm David asking God to save him. And not just asking be pleading to God for his safety and salvation during this time. And we know that David, even in his mess and his disfunction, he pursued God and trusted confidently in his ability to save and deliver him during these moments that he’s facing.
I don’t know about you. But I sometimes find myself in these moments where I being drawn into places and things that I know aren’t good for me. You see we might not be in the position where we are being chased by people who want to get us like David did. But we are pursued often by situations, thoughts, lusts, ideas, desires and the list goes on. We’re pursued by these things which seek to take control of our lives and most times what they do is they leave us unsatisfied and wanting more, or feeling like a failure who can never get things right and really messes up our feeling of self worth.
But the amazing part of the story for us and for David is that there is someone we can go to who we can confidently trust in who can completely deliver us from anything that comes at us. David knows and says that it’s God who sustains him, he know’s God will allow him to endure and push through what he’s facing.
You know what David was still being pursued by these people but he was so confident in God’s love for him and his ability to save him that he declares at the end of this Psalm that he will praise the name of the Lord for it is good.
That it is because of this power statement he knows that God will deliver him from all of his troubles and he’s able to look into the face of whatever is troubling him with triumph because he knows that in God and because of God he’s won.
And you know what? We can have the same confidence. That because of God’s love for us, because of his promises, like the one in Deutoronomy 31:6, “6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
So I want to encourage you with that this morning. As you day goes on to lean on God. You might feel like you’re in a place where you are being pursued by a lot of things. God is your help, rely on him. Rest in him because he is our help and strength.
Let’s pray together.
