The Gospel

Isaiah 25:6–9 ESV
6 On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. 7 And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. 8 He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. 9 It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”
This one of those powerful gospel passages in the OT
The vail that stands between God and man will be removed
Death will be swallowed up forever
God will wipe away every tear
The reproach (or shame) of his people will be taken away
Let us be glad and rejoice in our salvation.
Each of these promises have and will be fulfilled in Christ
God tore the vail that stood between us and him when Christ bore our sins upon the cross.
When Jesus was raised from the dead he defeated death, or as Paul says in 1 Cor 15 “death was swallowed up in victory”
We look forward to that day described in revelation when every tear will be wiped away. And praise God that he has removed our shame.
This passage is a gospel passage as it announces the good news!
I think this is important, we must understand that that the gospel is indeed good news, not just good advice.
The Gospel is the good news that the promised King has come, and through his death, resurrection, and ascension, he has brought you into his family and has given you a seat at his table.
We don’t often think of food as being part of the good news of the gospel
But Isaiah see it as being very important
Look back at Isaiah 25:6
Isaiah 25:6 ESV
6 On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.
The theme of food and its connection to the gospel is prevelant in the scriptures.
In fact, this is one of the very first themes in the bible.
Man was created hungry, and God gave him the tree of life to eat
For Adam and Even to eat from the tree of life was to eat with God.
When Adam and Even sinned they were kicked out of the garden so that they no longer could eat of the tree of life. Their sin kepted them from God’s table.
So one way to look at the story of bible is to see it as about God restoring table fellowship with his creation.
The bible is about taking hungry sinners and bringing them back to the table of God.
Lukes Gospel is all about God bringing hungry sinners back to his table.
There are 10 meals in Lukes Gospel and each one of them help paint this gospel picture of sinful people eating at the Lords Table.
Jesus at the Big Reception Luke 5:27 – 35
Jesus calls Livi the tax collector and he then throws a huge party for Jesus
of course the Pharisees and Scribes grumbled
The Real Host Luke 7:36 – 50
During a dinner with a Pharisee the sinful women came and washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and anointed his feet with oil.
Jesus Serves Up the Abundant Meal Luke 9:10 – 17
Jesus Feeds the 5000
Mary and Martah Luke 10:38 – 42
Mary and Martha - Martha is serving while Mary was listening to Jesus’ teaching.
Fellowship with God is more about eating with him than it is about serving him.
True Cleansing at the Table Luke 11:37 – 54
We often tell our kids to wash their hands before dinner
You don’t sit down to eat unless your hands are clean
Jesus flips this on the Pharisees who were upset that Jesus didn’t wash before dinner.
Living Out Jesus’ Table Fellowship Luke 14:1 – 33
Parable of the Wedding Feat
sinners moving closer to Jesus
Parable of the Great banquet
Inviting the outcast to come into the banquet
The Three Joyful Homecoming Feasts Luke 15:1 – 32
Lost sheep is found and then there is a feast
Lost coin is found and then there is a feast
Lost child (prodigal son) is found and then there is a feast
Celebrating With Zaccheus Luke 18:15 – 19:10
When Jesus meets Zaccheus he eats with him
The Lords Supper Luke 22:14 – 20
Jesus institutes the meal that we still eat today as we anticipate his making all things news
Paradise Regained Around Jesus’ Table Luke 24:13 – 49
Jesus eats with the disciples on the road to Emmaus
Before Jesus ascends to the father he eats with his disciples.
Jesus embodies this glorious truth of the gospel, that the promised King has come, and through his death, resurrection, and ascension, he has brought you into his family and has given you a seat at his table.
Church, this has been a lonely season for many of you.
To not be able to fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ each week is a real challange
The stress of job security and financial stability is one that can lead to dispare
Though these challenges are real, we are not like those who suffer without hope. For we have a great hope in the gospel.
We have the hope that we are part of the family of God.
He has seated us at his table
He has called us his own
He has covered us with his righteousness
And he has given us every reason to rejoice
Isaiah 25:9 ESV
9 It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”
