If the father in your life is meant to depict the strength of God, the sternness of God, the discipline of God and the leadership of God. Then your mother is meant to depict the tenderness of God, the compassion of God, the nurturing of God and the comfort of God.

Isaiah 66:13 ESV
As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit Sermons, Vol. LVI The Tenderness of God’s Comfort (No. 3,189)

WE do not intend entering into a discussion of the context and its relationship literally to the Jewish people. We have never hesitated to assert our conviction that there are great blessings in store for God’s ancient Israel, and that the day shall come when her comfort shall abound, when the glory of the Gentiles shall flow to her like a flowing stream, and she shall be comforted by her God as one whom his mother comforteth. But we believe that these passages are applicable to all the servants of God, that the comfortable passages of Scriptures are theirs, that whether Jew or Gentile, bond or free, barbarian or Greek, we are all one in Christ Jesus, and all the promises are ours in him, for in him all the promises are “yea” and “amen.” I believe, then, that this passage belongs to every child of God.

Job 5:7 ESV
but man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward.
If the father in your life is meant to depict the leadership of God, the discipleship of God, the discipline of God and the strength of God. Then your mother is meant to depict the tenderness of God, the compassion of God, the nurturing of God and the comfort of God.
Proverbs 27:17 ESV
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.

Sometimes We need Iron

Sometimes we need sharpening. Many times in Israel’s history it had needed sharpening.
They had needed to learn to listen and obey. They needed to learn to follow Godly leadership.
During this time, as we have dealt with the coronavirus, I, as a man and a leader, have had to make difficult tough decisions. I have to make them from a position of strength and resolve. I have needed to be iron.
There is a place for that for sure.

Sometimes We Need Softness

Proverbs 10:1 ESV
The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.

A Father desires your success.

A Mother desires your wellbeing.

Ezekiel 36:26 ESV
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
We do not just need to learn to be tough, we need to learn how to be soft.
One complaint we hear over and over today is that people do not know how to express their emotions.
Could it be that we have become so driven for success that we have forgotten wellbeing?
The difference for me has always been the hug.
My dad hugs me in a strong way, and it is quick.
My mom hugs in a soft and tender way that is much longer.
I love my God. I love that He has given me to examples to learn who He is.
He gave me my dad because sometimes I need iron
But he gave me a mom
because,

Sometimes I Need Comfort

If you are a believer, you need to thank God today for your Mother.
Thank God for what she means
She means

God is Tender

not just strong
Isaiah 63:9 ESV
In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

God is Compassionate

not just stern
Psalm 103:13 ESV
As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

God is Nurturing

Not just discipline
Psalm 127:3 ESV
Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.

God is Comfort

not just leadership
Psalm 23:4 ESV
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Isaiah 66:13 ESV
As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

For Mother’s Day- One time a little boy was called up front to solve a math problem. The teacher asked him, “You have a pie with 6 pieces. There are 5 in your family: your brother, your sister, your mother and father and you. Each one gets one piece of the pie. Now you only have one piece left. We don’t want to cause any disagreements so it is decided to divide that last piece of pie evenly among your family. Tell me with a fraction how it will be divided up.” The little boy said, “1/4th.” The teacher said, “No, it would be 1/5th because there are 5 in your family and it will be divided evenly.” The little boy said, “No, teacher, it will be 1/4th. This happens all of the time in my family and my mother divides up the piece of pie but she never gives any to herself.” WE should be like that mother. Who comes first?

We serve a God who gives to us in that same selfless way.
I truly love my God for His willingness to comfort me in times like the ones we currently face.
He says, “it will be alright. I am here, and I always will be”.
Doesn’t that sound just like a mother?
Isaiah 66:13 ESV
As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
He will be there. He will comfort
Maybe you need that type of comfort today?
