To Be Sung

Psalm 18:1-3, “
1  I love you, O LORD, my strength.
2  The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3  I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.
Choirmaster: Psalms, like this, were firstly mean to be put to music. David wrote it, and said - “to the choirmaster”. Not just placed to music. But also placed into song. Israel would have sang this. For years, it would have been even part of their lives. And has remained, having been an inspired Psalm. It remained even to today.
The Psalm here is stated to be a song, as it’s very intent. It was a milestone Psalm. It was a milestone song. It was a Psalm that was the result of God delivering David from all his enemies, and from his stress years of suffering under King Saul’s abuses.
Even the church has made a song, and they have sang it for years, based on this Psalm. “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, so shall I be saved from my enemies! I will call upon the Lord. The Lord liveth, and blessed be the rock, and may the God of my salvation be exalted.”
Right away, David begins the Psalm in expressing to God that he loves him.
David establishes that it is God who has rescued him
David explains and declares that God is his strength.
He says, that he will call upon God.

The Enemies of God Serve A Purpose

Psalm 18:3, “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.”
God has worked it, that his people will not be saved from their enemies until they call on his name. Whether it means that they have to learn to do this. The enemies of God and the enemies of the people of God serve a purpose.
They show who belongs to God and who joins them.
They actually purge out those who belong to God, because those who do not belong to God will not call on his name.
God establishes that HE will be the one to be trusted.

Saved From Sure Doom

Psalm 18:4-6, “
The cords of death encompassed me;
the torrents of destruction assailed me;
5  the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.
6  In my distress I called upon the LORD;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.
If God did not come to David’s aid, to his rescue and salvation. It means that David would succumb to the “cords of death” to the snares of the enemy and the confrontations of the enemy. And even to the currents.
Have you ever found that the world has a power to it, a power to take you and to hold you? This power is a real thing. It can take you, and hold you and keep you, if it is not for the work of God, to come and rescue and to establish you in the truth.
The power of deception is real and the power of God alone can save.
Next week we will look at more of this Psalm! God bless!
